"If this provision becomes law, its duration is limited to one year, as it is part of an annual appropriations bill. For that one year, it will be open season on all birds, as no one need fear prosecution. "

(This past week) without a recorded vote, the House of Representatives Commerce, Justice, Science Committee included a rider, offered by Congressman Duncan (R-SC), in the Department of Commerce's and Department of Justice's budget appropriations bill that would prohibit the federal government from prosecuting anyone from violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

"My amendment will delay prosecution..."
-Rep Jeff Duncan

Evidently Duncan felt that didn't go far enough, so he just gutted protections for all migratory birds, whether or not they are endangered.

The rider would therefore prohibit the Department of Justice from spending any money, including paying the salary of DOJ attorneys, to prosecute the MBTA. It, in effect, suspends all prosecutions for the year.

H.R. 2578

"Congressman Duncan’s completely unnecessary ‘Bird Killer Amendment’ would endanger the birds Americans care deeply about,” said Mike Daulton, VP of Government Relations for the National Audubon Society.

" Allowing this amendment to become law is tantamount to an avian slaughter free-for-all.”

Why does this dope feel so strongly about this issue? Did some rich guy in his district get prosecuted for killing a bald eagle once upon a time?

The obsessions of Tea Partiers will never stop being surprising.

Is it not funny, that he did it "by accident." (Sorry, but I am not buying that claim.)

You cannot imagine how many corporations are bringing out the noisemakers and party hats.

A list of corporations that is as long as your arm, and your leg.

It is a dream that has come true, for them.

The item about formerly protected eagles is heartbreaking.

So much, for our patriotic national symbol.

The "green energy" companies will not be walking away without being painted with the same brush.

They wanted rewrites, allowances, and exceptions just as much as the straight ahead polluters.

China did this once. Had the people bang pots day and night so the birds became too disoriented or punch drunk to get away. Slaughtered birds by the tens of millions.

Thanks to their ingenuity, their crops were devastated the following year due to pest infestations, causing a major food shortage.

yikes

At least, they did the killing, themselves.

Not as delicious as ortolan.(So, I hear.)

America is about to make another ecological blunder in the name of getting rid of an invasive pest.
