Outside of Franklin County High School in Kentucky, students protested an email sent to their teachers instructing them not to allow homosexuals to use the restroom during class.

The email sent by Asst. Principal Karen Buzard was in response to an incident where two female students were caught kissing in the school restroom.

“I have been in contact with one of the parents of the children involved in the protest, and we support and encourage their constitutional right to assemble peacefully,” stated Kentucky Equality Federation President Jordan Palmer. “We call on the media to investigate this issue further and shed light on the discrimination gays and lesbians face throughout the Commonwealth. Kentucky Equality Federation will also be contacting the other parents of the children involved in today’s protest.”

Laura Reed, Managing Director of KEF is concerned because they have also received complaints from other counties.

“I’d like to know what level this mentality, that gay and lesbian students should not be treated equally is coming from. An incident in one county could be called an isolated incident, but we now have similar reports in three other Kentucky Counties. I’d certainly like to know what Education Secretary Helen W. Mountjoy has to say about these incidents.”

How odd. According to the school’s website April is the month for tolerance.

Doesn’t sound like a very tolerant school if you ask me.

I'm for equal rights, too. They should let straight girls into the boys restroom to kiss boys and straight guys into the girls restroom to kiss their sweethearts as they comb their hair and sneak a cigarette.

Sad as it is to see AGAIN, Kentucky is a pretty sorry ass state when it comes to human rights. Their track record on the subject SUCKS. They didn't even ratify the 13th, 14th and 15th Ammendments to the U.S. Constitution until 1976 and the state constitution wasn't amended to remove provisions for a poll tax and segregated schools until 1996.

*puffs a fag/cigarette* well you know I can sadly only roll my eyes to that, but equal rights mean equal rights, and this is NOT equal rights.

this all over girls kissing in a bathroom. the school does not approve. don't kiss in the bathroom. deal with it.don't make it a watershed moment.
this country is fucking itself up in lightning fast time thanks to ridiculous " causes" such as this blowing up in our face.
and the gay rights crowd is more than happy to turn shit upside down so they have " the right" to kiss each other in a high school bathroom.
how fucking immature are you?

Excuse me ? just because I was smoking a fag ? after all, I wouldn't use the word fag as anything else than in a cigarette. Jesus ! what is your problem ?

Well, I think the whole case is stupid, but then again I think it is something typically American. Since another case I read was about a boy hugged his girlfriend at school. And he was expelled from school for a week. And the only and stupid excuse from the school was, that no signs were allowed, neither handshakes or anything. Because they wouldn't allow gangsigns in school. But when has a common handshake or a hug become a gang sign ? But then again Powertone could you please get back to your own yard, which is the general board ? since it looks like most of your postings belongs there, and not here where we try to see the logic in the stupid schools ideas.

I guess I can see both sides of the issue.

However, I think the school needs to make themselves clear: If they aren't letting homosexual students use the restrooms during class, then they need to be consistent and not let the heterosexual students use the restrooms during class either. In my opinion, if it's class time, then it should be class time, not bathroom time.

For ALL students. Period. And THAT should be the school's policy.

Hey...this "issue" and all "issues" that homosexuals are demanding be addressed involve the straight community being forced to accommodate you .

I'm giving you LOGIC on this matter and it's not what you want hear.
Who are you? Perez Hilton?

Nice job throwing "chum" in the water, chum. Wow! Seems as if other people can use words that have more than one meaning as argument bait too. We all knew that a fag is what some people call a cigarette and others use as a depreciative term and we know that a fagot is a bundle of sticks too. Seeing the self proclaimed "LGBT Defender" use it to garner a rise out of some other asshat, with whom he wants to continue an ongoing argument from another thread, is pretty pathetic. Grow the fuck up, dude.

No sorry, I'll actually respond without sarcasm...

The subject of the article is about gays and lesbians NOT being allowed to go to the restrooms during class when straight kids ARE allowed to go. They are preventing certain people from doing what they allow other people to do. There ain't no "accommodating" going on there, there is only prejudicial treatment of a group of people because they don't agree with their sexual orientation. PERIOD.

If the "straight community" ever gets it thought their bigoted heads that the "queer" community doesn't want to take anything away from them, but instead simply wants the EXACT SAME rights that straights enjoy, we will finally make some progress.

Why do we keep giving children rights? They usually just abuse them.

Safe_Bet: I am getting tired of your attacks on me, and I think it is time you had a lovely explanation chat/talk with our mutual friend Gi_Venus. About me, since I don´t think it is pretty flattering that you are after my balls so much. And second of all, could you please stop this shit ?

What I rolled my eyes at, was the typical stuff. Okay ? I am not saying I am living in a wonderland, but we are at least more at ease with both the sexual age of consent and with sexuality . If such a thing happened in Denmark , then the chief of the school would have been fired the next day, because it is NOT illegal for gay people to kiss each other in a bathroom , and especially NOT if both of them are over 15. And also we are more tolerant to such things as a kiss. And the only ones who object to the tolerant views are the minority.

And the word fag had NOTHING to do with your accusations of me pissing anybody off. The fagot is musical instrument, faggot is a BIG nono in my book to use. The English I learned when I was a child wasn't the American English, but a variant of British English.

Stop flattering yourself. I could care a shit less about you, dude. The thing is that it is WAY clear what you were trying to do. Stay on topic, without the really poor attempts to bait the trolls, and I will gladly ignore you. K, sweetcheeks?

Wolfman, SB is right. You obviously bait people, and you have for years. She's just the first person to call you on it. Powertone and John Doe have every right to engage in discussion here, which for the most part is what they do.

As for the article, how the hell are teachers supposed to determine who's gay and who's not? That seems a much bigger issue than treating gays and straights equally. Obviously the rule should be for everyone or no one, that's a given. But how do they propose to enforce the rule? That's the bizarre part IMHO.

Very fishy indeed, Etoile. That's the problem. You can't make a statement like "no homosexual students are allowed to use the bathroom during class." That rule needs to blanket the student body or the school board is looking down the barrel of a gun holding lawsuits and even more newspaper articles.

Wtf?

So maybe everyone should just pee themselves during class.

Girls just want to have fun. With all of our problems, kissing is not in my top ten.

Apparently just the queer kids... The straights can go to the bathrooms during class, have a quick cigarette and hook up with their GF/BF for a kiss before going back to English class to listen to their teacher talk about that worthless and disgusting dyke poet Carol Ann Duffy...

In most cases, I find reading blogs to be somewhat akin to watching Hannity on the one hand, or Olbermann on the other. Seems useful for getting the like-minded worked into a lather, but rarely, if ever, presents a balanced or distortion-free view.

A local newspaper described the Kentucky incident this way:

"A group of 15 students and a few parents protested Friday morning in front of Franklin County High School over what they say is discrimination against gays and lesbians using restrooms during class.

Michael Barnes, 17, a former student at FCHS, said he organized the protest after hearing about an e-mail allegedly sent by Assistant Principal Karen Buzard prohibiting homosexuals from going to the restroom together.

In response, FCHS Principal Sharon Collett told The State Journal, 'We would never send out an e-mail that had anything to do with sexual orientations.' ”

The school's website reports the following:

"On Friday May 1, several students protested their perception of a case of discrimination. They protested in an orderly fashion.

However, there was misinformation behind the reasons for the protest. At no time was there ever a directive issued to the staff barring any specific group of students from using the restrooms.

The only directive given was that certain students should not be allowed to leave the classroom during class because they had been in violation of school rules. All students have time between classes to use the facilities.

The staff at FCHS strives to provide a caring, accepting atmosphere that respects all students."

No way to verify what did or didn't happen without further investigation, of course. But the point I'd make is that further investigation seems warranted before condemning the school or reaching any conclusions.

Uh huh, and that all of the "certain students" happened to be gay or lesbian doesn't make you want to scream "Bullshit!" at them?

No, it doesn't.

As far as I can tell from the limited reports available, two female students were allegedly caught kissing in the bathroom, in violation of school rules. Those are the "certain students" - not all gays and lesbians in Franklin classrooms.
