Man Claims Time Traveler Caught on Film
(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - A filmmaker has generated a lot of interest in a silent film from the 1920s after claiming to have discovered that one of its extras is speaking on a cell phone. George Clarke's video on YouTube detailing his "time traveler" claim has garnered over 1.5 million views, what do you think of his claim.
Clarke has suggested that the person must be a time traveler. After all walkie talkies weren't even around until more than a decade later, according to The New York Daily News .
Clarke, a Northern Ireland resident, who said he's screened it for about 100 people at a film festival, said no one can give him a better explanation.
"I want to try to get this out there, because right now the only conclusion is ... a time traveler." Clarke say in the video, which he posted earlier this month.
The woman in question in the film appears in extra scene included on the DVD of "The Circus," a 1928 silent film staring Charlie Chaplin. The woman is shown outside Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood where the film premiered.
She does appear to have something in her hand. The question remains what is it?
The Daily News suggests it could be a hearing aid, which was invented in the 1920s and would have been available through at least a few manufacturers.
TIME magazine's NewsFeed blog agrees that is plausible, but TIME and other media do question why she looks to be talking into it and not listening to it. The blog suggests she could be testing it, talking to someone nearby or "she could just be crazy and talking to herself."
"To me, it looks as though she just likes walking with her hand on her face, because she doesn't want the camera to capture that side of her soul," joked Washington Post ComPost blogger Alexandra Petri. She also asked why a time traveler would visit the set of "The Circus."
"People didn't even watch 'The Circus' when it came out, and back then many people were dying of polio and needed the emotional release of laughter," wrote Petri.
Nonetheless Clarke is convinced.
"I kept rewinding it and zoom-ing in to try and work out what was going on," he said to the UK Daily Record . "I have been studying this footage for over a year now and I just can't explain it."
The Daily Record said Clarke's clip has been viewed at least 800,000 times on YouTube in a week. Clarke told the newspaper there has been some fallout.
"I'm hearing from a lot of ex-government officials, men 70-odd years of age, who tell me about secret government operations," he said.

You had a visitor at the pub....
The only thing worse then spending a Saturday doing laundry is starting the washing machine just to find out it does not drain the water.
I had to siphon the water out with a garden hose .
Time to call Sears Home appliance repair, the machine is 9 months old, most likely made in China.
I wish I had a scrub board.
