Four Katrina refugees went to the goodwill the other day to get some cloths. They were giving out discounts, but do you know to who? I'll tell you: The millitary and students...

They told the store manger theat they were evacuees and the responce was if he just died: Complete. Dead. Silence. They asked if they could get a discount and he spun off with "I'm sorry, but at this present time, we cannot."

Why not Katrina victims? New Orleans evacuees? Why? This is the fucking goodwill, is it not?

Sorry, Thought you were talking about an article. That really sucks. We've gone through our whole house finding things to donate.

Just to play devils advocate......

Where is the goodwill that you went to? i.e. What city? Maybe they are looking out for people trying to scam them. I don't imagine that there's any such thing as proof of Katrina victim documentation, is there?

If I owned a goodwill store in Ky, and someone came in wanting a discount claiming to be a victim of Katrina, I'd be suspicious.

They get that stuff for free....

However, I'm not sure that Goodwill really specializes in natural disasters. They are more of a disabled and unemployed type charity.

But still...they get that stuff for free....

Who goes out to scam the Goodwill?
If anyone was that desparate, they must seriously be in need.

That fact that we walked in with a New Orleans Saints and a Mardi Gras shirt should have been a dead giveaway, but the fact of the matter is, 1) if you're from Orleans parish, you're a victim. 2) They didn't care.

I hate to tell ya Sweets, but there are people out there who will take advantage of absolutly anyone. Just look at all the con artists that showed up after Hurricane Andrew a few years ago.

People will scam anyone, even goodwill.

Wearing a Saints shirt doesn't mean you're from New Orleans. I'm from Ky and have several Denver Broncos shirts. How many people per year go to Mardi Gras?

Yea, but who fucking cares?
when a CAT 5 devestates a major US city, getting ripped for handy down clothing should be the last of people's concern.

You outta your fucking mind? No one at Goodwill EVEN ASKED US to prove our...

...SILENCE!

THE GOODWILL NEEDS TO BE BANNED! PERIOD!

And fuck you! You don't even KNOW the kind of hoops they've put us through! And you don't KNOW what it's like... No, you don't!

But I do!

I would have given them some clothes. Not a discount, some clothes.

Could it be a scam? sure, it's possible. so what? Anything is possible.

I don't think it's good will, per say, but the person at the counter. They were not instructed in what to do in this situation, and did not feel comfortable bending the rules- nor did they likely have the authority. Most managers I have worked for (and these were not even charities) would have given free product if it was reasonable to believe that they were evacuees.

At the very least, they could have just given them the student discount.

An unfortunate event. However, better for those seeking aid to call the administrative office than to go into the store. Or even call a local shelter or red cross who will probably give them- uh, crap the word I wanted went out my head- vouchers.

Brinny, sorry to hear that you've been going through so much. Don't give up just yet. There are folks who will be helpful and folks who won't, or who don't have the authority.

Although it is a charity, remember that the person behind the counter does not *own* good will, nor do they own any of the merchandise. They are probably makeing minimum wage or close and just want to keep their job.
