Justice for Antonio?

You won't recognize me. My name was Antonio West and I was the 13-month old child who was shot at point blank range by two teens who were attempting to rob my mother, who was also shot. A Grand Jury of my mommy's peers from Brunswick GA determined the teens who murdered me will not face the death penalty...too bad I was given a death sentence for being innocent and defenseless.

My family made the mistake of being white in a 73% non-white neighborhood, but my murder was not ruled a Hate Crime. Nor did President Obama take so much as a single moment to acknowledge my murder.

I am one of the youngest murder victims in our Nation's history, but the media doesn't care to cover the story of my tragic demise, President Obama has no children who could possibly look like me - so he doesn't care and the media doesn't care because my story is not interesting enough to bring them ratings so they can sell commercial time slots.

There is not a white equivalent of Al Sharpton because if there was he would be declared racist, so there is no one rushing to Brunswick GA to demand justice for me. There is no White Panther party to put a bounty on the lives of those who murdered me. I have no voice, I have no representation and unlike those who shot me in the face while I sat innocently in my stroller - I no longer have my life.

So while you are seeking justice for Trayvon, please remember to seek justice for me too. Tell your friends about me, tell you families, get tee shirts with my face on them and make the world pay attention, just like you did for Trayvon.

Thank you.

I could be wrong but I don't think a grand jury is made up of "peers" and they don't decide if a case gets the death penalty.

Actually, the death penalty is illegal in Georgia if you are under 18......

Kind of beside the point wouldn't you say?

No. That was the very first point you made and it is not only incorrect but simply doesn't apply to the state. Nor is the death penalty justice in a modern age.

Actuality I made no point as I did not write it. But if you want to know the point I take away from this it is simple;

It was a story worthy of more media coverage, but it just doesn't fit the media's narrative of playing up the racial divide by demonizing whites, playing the race card and the victimization of minorities.

Such obvious attempts to manipulate my emotions always leave me cold. Why not just tell the story, grim as it is, without it. It's sick, pretending to be the voice of a dead kid to push a political agenda.

You're just now realizing this?

Agree 100%. Much like "he could be my son". Unfortunately I am not very good at that two wrongs don't make a right crap....

You're just now realizing this?

nah....It's a pretty simple lesson. Just seems many on this board do not get it.

They don't? I haven't seen anyone who doesn't know the media twists stories and ignores stories based on ratings and/or political leanings. Everyone here knew they were intentionally showing the old pic of Trayvon and the mug shot of Zimmerman. Just like everyone knows they love stories about missing or murdered white women and ignore ones about blacks.
It's life. Get over it.

How does being outraged by one incident take away from anyone's outrage about another?

No, not really. One is an oft needed reminder that those people could easily be your people, there but for the grace of harble, and all that jazz. The other is some fucked up shithead pretending to be the voice of a dead baby.

Also, that guy in the pic was ugly as sin.

That whole outrage about he could be my son is the most retarded thing.

He was speaking as a father to the victims parents.

Get the fuck over it. Only racist assholes would find anything wrong with it.

That doesn't fit the narrative that somehow the country is outraged only by white on black violence and that white Americans are systematically oppressed.

What outrage over this incident? Hell I did not even know about it till I saw the blurb above on FB.

So what we have here one one hand is mass hysteria over the court of law proving one persons innocence, 24 hour news coverage, the DOJ trying to play hero, and the president trying to get brownie points.

But on the other hand you have a 13 month old baby getting shot in the face, and no media, DOJ, or President.

There is no outrage.

and yet...even when brought to light. Antonio is ignored, the race card is played, politics come through, and everyone just want to talk about Travon.

Media. They decide what the sheeple get outraged at. How many stations/papers are plugging it daily?

and Antonio's parents do not deserve the same courtesy? why not?

Can't you just state your point and then move on? TYVM.

Antonio's parents deserve to see this sick parody of their child's voice?
If someone did that to the memory of my dead kid i'd want to vom & kill, kill & vom.

His murderers are arrested, charged and will be brought to trial, as it seems likely to be found guilty, convicted and sentenced to the full extent of the law. Bad guys did bad things, everybody agrees that the bad guys are bad. Bad guys get tried by the book. What other justice do you want?

People talk about Zimmerman and Martin because there was contention and controversy. None here.

Exactly, it is normal for black youth to shoot babies in the face. No controversy there.

Worth repeating (from Snopes):
The comparisons in the example text between the killings of Trayvon Martin and Antonio West are an example of false equivalency, however, as the two cases are nearly polar opposites:

  • In the Trayvon Martin case, there was never any doubt as to the identify of his killer (George Zimmerman). In the Antonio West case, the identity of the killer(s) was unknown until suspects were determined through police investigation.
  • In the Trayvon Martin case, several weeks elapsed before the shooter was charged with a crime and taken into custody, fostering the public perception (correct or not) that the case would never have been adjudicated had it not been widely publicized in the media. In the Antonio West case, suspects were arrested and charged within days of the shooting, and thus there was no reason for anyone to "rush to Brunswick GA to demand justice."
  • In the Trayvon Martin case there was at least a suggestion (although it was not proved in court) that the victim's race was an element of the shooting and the delay in bringing charges; in the Antonio West case, charges were brought promptly, and police have said they believe the child and his mother were the victims of a random crime, not one which targeted them because of their race.

The Antonio West killing did garner a fair amount of national coverage (particularly on CNN) at the time it occurred, but that level of attention soon waned when suspects were arrested and charged within days of the shooting. In a country that sees over 16,000 homicides every year, the Antonio West case had no controversial aspects to drive ongoing coverage.
