Just what we needed.

In The Female Brain you tell us that sexual thoughts float through a man's brain every 52 seconds on average, and through a woman's only once a day.

Complete, utter, total BULLSHIT.

They should get a more honest group of women for these studies. We know that they didn't ask any of the Lit ladies.

I agree with both of you. If I were to believe that this information was accurate, I'd have to conclude that I have the brain of a man. Admittedly, I have a lot of masculine impulses, and frequently feel more male than female, but I think about sex in equal amounts no matter how masc/fem I'm feeling at a given time. This broad is an idiot if she believes her study is accurate. Worse, she's deluding herself into believing that she, herself, only thinks about sex once a day.

I wonder if they were testing these aptitudes based on empyrical or simply observational evidence? In other words did they hook someone up to test the neurons firing or did they just say "which are you better at"?

A lot of what they're claiming could just as easily be societal, and like any other part of your anatomy the more you use it the stronger it becomes...so if a man doesn't bother with emotional responces it doesn't grow as actively as in one who does...

Yeah, I'm not impressed by the article...

Of course men and women are different, mentally, phsyically, emotionally and socially. Bloody waste of scientific grant resources. Cure cancer dammit.

And "Vive La Différence!"

I'm really NOT impressed because more and more we're finding that men and women are not always quantifable as "men" and "women." This is not a mathematical formula of you're there or not there. When you've got women who can be very butch lesbians and men who can be very feminine transexuals....how do you quantify that you absolutely, positively have a "male brain" or a "female brain"?

More particularly, when cells can have XXY chromosomes rather than just XY, once again, how do you make sure you've got a man vs. a woman?

When some guys love to stay at home and raise their kids and some women love to go out into the workplace and have very little maternalistic feelings at all...how can you be sure that your results about the woman wanting to take care of others is correct vs. that man wanting to be out working?

Who were the test subjects for this study? How many did she use and where did they come from? San Francisco ought to have let her have quite a wide variety of gender benders...did she get the same results from them?

I'm not saying that testosterone or estrogen doesn't affect brain development; of course it does--just that I think it's not so easy to say that EVERY brain belonging to every human being with a womb is going to be the same. Likewise, EVERY brain belonging to every human being who produces sperm is not going to be the same. How much estrogen or testosterone gets to an infant in the womb can make a vast difference no matter what sex the child is.

A man who says, "I'm a woman trapped in a man's body...." how does this study explain that? Is he RIGHT? On the brain level?

What a dull, cliché study. It feels several decades out of date.

very short periods of time. im kind of sexually AD/HD
its only a matter of perspective.
your av turns me on in a very strange and provocative way.

Liberal brains and conservative brains, now there's a difference! Predatory asshole brains versus the spineless sheep who follow them-- write me a grant! Oh, and let's have another study about racial differences in the brain. There have been a whole pantload of such "scientific" studies before now, and they are all discredited and they were all pernicious in their effects.

There's a good deal of bogus science being funded right now. The Dr. Whatsis who spearheaded the campaign to deny global warming was a Ph.D.-- in sociology! Which is why he was working in the propaganda field in the first place-- he'd gone to school for it. Studies were funded denying the ozone holes, too. Just because someone publishes a book-- particularly a popular-science book aimed at lay readership-- doesn't make a damn thing they say true.

Since she begins and ends by calling for a new social contract of inequality, I would very strongly urge anyone to spend the time to check her bona fides before giving her an ear.

Now THAT is a damned shame. (I wanted to be in the double-blind research study.)

He's Charles Hawtrey, an actor who starred in the British "Carry On" films of the 1960's. John Lennon refers to him on the Beatles album "Let It Be".

I'm glad it turns you on, because it means you're still mad as a hatter, which I love.

as the others said... how can you really determine what is "biological" and what is just the result of socialization?

and... isn't that one of the things you can always "prove" as easily as the opposite, depending on how you approach your study?

apart from that, sometimes i WISH i would only think of sex once a day... my life might be more quiet... but that isn't the case...

Vella, I think you're on to something there. Stay with it. I volunteer for any research assistance you need in proving your theory. I've stimulated a few in my time.

it is extremely important to be totally objective. i use no placebo...dildo's on the other hand, can play a huge roll in this arena.

'sides which, i love books aimed at 'lay' people.

I couldn't have said it better.

And by the last piece of the article, apparently I'm now a prime candidate for legislature or big business.....because my hormones have now removed my stumbling block for success....my sensitivity and compassion for others.

I'll use Imp's words again. Bullshit.
