Just one Line.

Some times... one line just doesn't do enough justice, does it? From a WIP -

He gave me a conspiratorial look and put a hushing finger against his lips, glancing left and right as if somebody might overhear. Somebody might of course, since we were in a publicly accessible location, but the number of bodies nearby could have safely been counted on one hand with half the fingers folded.

He blinked, wincing as sunlight stabbed at his eyes. “Ngh.” His mouth felt like he’d been eating dead things from the bottom of the swamp.

"Let the streets run red with their blood!" Abigail bellowed from atop the table, pointing at the men gathered around her. "Let our ears ring from the sound of their screams and our lungs filled with the stench of their burning flesh!"

"Well," Seth whispered to Lydia. "I'm glad to see you were able to talk some sense into her."

Because of the manner of our parting, there were no memories of hurt feelings or angry words. So Gena had remained in a state of eternal grace in my memory.

As the nausea passed, I sat on the floor; the tiles felt colder than normal. I willed myself to get up, but I couldn't. The floor was safe, the floor gave me the protection of ignorance.

My University ladies’ man persona was in full effect. My new girlfriend had come to my bed with one layer separating me from her nakedness, and I was talking about nappy changes and my dead parents. Josie, to her credit, wasn’t repulsed and stayed with me as I told her a childhood memory I wasn’t even sure was mine. But the moment had died.

"Her song flowed with sensuous harmony, as he marked her skin’s territory like an explorer planting a flag."

From a story I'm putting the finishing touches on, about a sexual encounter with a very non-human alien... Can you give hickeys to someone who doesn't have a head or neck? 🤨

I left a hickey in a woman's arm. It's possible.

I'd thought forever was a joke, but she was right. It was no longer just about sex but real connection. No one builds connections hoping for a day or a month. They want to build something that lasts. Maybe we didn't have to think about it or even confront forever right then or even soon, but it was something to think about.

"As I tossed it over, I realised that there was only one answer. The only people who could have a valid opinion about what was offensive in Japan were the Japanese. What my parents or church friends would think was completely irrelevant, because they had no say in the matter."

From "A Crack in the Glass", just out.

Submitted, pending ....

"George, what the hell is going on here? Am I really hearing this?"

Also, (different character):

You can have that whenever you want. You’ve earned that. And I don’t even always let my dates or boyfriends have that. They have to earn it every time. But as long as you give me what I need, that’s yours for the asking.”
The first line feels like a big revelation or confrontation, and the second one definitely has a layered dynamic to it. Curious to see how these play out in context, definitely seems like there’s some tension and power balance at play!

"My dearest Lady Puddingbosom. Pray, may I be so bold as to make manifest my depth of gratitude by bestowing upon thee a tender peck on the lips?"

"Viscount Lumbergroin! I am aghast at such a bold proposal!"

(oops... that's two lines) From Maybe We're More. Out now.

"No," Charlie poked at the fire with a stick, and then looked at Ryan, "When the pale rider comes for me, I will welcome him with open arms, and embrace him like an old friend, I will kiss his cheeks.
