Sometimes wor can just be plain strange. Today was no exception.

I suppose I'll have to set the stage.

Two weeks ago I had a patient show up on the floor. He had come in because of abdominal pain, was X-Rayed and scanned then given I.V. Antibiotics because his Appendix seemed slightly inflamed. They didn't operate because the inflamation wasn't bad enough to call in a surgeon on the weeend. By that Monday the inflamation seemed to be going down so they postponed the surgery. He was also on a good amount of pain killers which made him act a bit loopy. We talked quite a bit and he told me about his marriage and how his wife was sickly. By the second day though his comments were a bit "innapropriate". He was talking about how he had been raised as a single child and had married young so he had never done any experimenting. He also commented on how he had always thought his "package" was too small. That day I blew it off while telling him this was a not uncommon thought among men.

The third day was the charm though. His M.D. had reviewed his files and found everything to be normal. He was informed that he wouldn't be needing surgery and would be released the next day. He also ordered that his pain medication be stopped. A short while later I was helping him get cleaned up when he attempted to grope me repeatedly. (Attempted because it didn't happen, I watch for this because of the stereo-typing of males in the Nursing Field.) He claimed he just wanted to compare.

Later that day, after his pain meds had worn off he called me to his room. He appologised profusely for his actions while attempting to explain them. Once again he brought up the idea that he thought he was too small and how this had preyed on his mind for most of his life. I ended up talking with him for quite some time about this "problem" and how he came about it. We talked about how our society seems to have this hang up with size and how he wasn't the only one who seemed to feel this way. (As evidenced by the many adds for cures for this "malady".) I also recomended that if he continued to feel this way he seek professional help before he approached the wrong person. By the time he left he was in a much better mood and thanked me repeatedly for helping him.

Today I was given a letter, a copy of which is in my record jacket in work. This letter was from that patient to the head of the Hospital as well as to the head of Nursing in the Hospital. In this letter he thaned the hospital for his care, then he went on to name me and state that he was happy to report on my professionalism and humanity in helping him deal with a highly personal issue during his stay in the hospital. He stated that even though I was busy I took the time to help him and treated him as what he was, a human being in need of help, and I did so in a way that didn't embarass him.

To say this made me feel good about my work would be an understatement.
