Hi there all -
Im a new author about to post my first story for the world at large (if I can ever get into my account properly) and just have a few questions about what drives other people and so forth.

* Do you let people in your real life know that you do this (write erotic fiction to post online?
*Do you take scenarios from your own life, or your fantasy life, or just make them up based on what you think others will like?
*How long does it take you to write a story - I've written before (not for 'publication' though and it can take me anywhere from a couple hours to two days in the right mindset, is this unusually fast?

Just curious, I'd love any responses or advice that you chose to give, and hope you all look me up once my story (which I still haven't named!) is posted

I've let many of my good, trusted internet friends know about my erotic writing. I've even told some of my real life friends, and I just started at the beginning of this month myself. As for writing, I don't know, I wrote my first erotic story in several hours, it was the editting that was the longer process.

I have a novel I've been working on since 1996 however, that I keep getting writers block on, so it is all completely subjective.

As for taking scenarios from my own life, yes I do. As in any writing I do I take from my own experiences as I'm sure any good writer would tell you. (not saying I'm nessisarily good or not :p) It adds more believablity to your story and more often than not, people can associate with what you have written.

Eyup Dec and welcome to the zoo.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with asking questions when you're starting out on something new, this is just to let you know that you're not alone.

Every question you asked has been asked and answered many times in the Hangout. By many many people and undoubtedly will be again. So next time you can give the answers. Cosmic debt and all that.

The answers you get will be as many and varied as the people who reply, often diametrically opposed.

The answers are: Sometimes. Sometimes and no.

Only a few people in RL know that I write for this site, I don't go round telling them but occasionally I need the answer to some research and the people I ask are curious about why I want to know. I say "I'm writing a story." They say "Really? What kind? Can I read it?" I usually answer "Pornography. You can read it if you want."

I haven't so far taken any actual scenarios from life but I have taken some characters, or parts thereof. They do say that to write naturally you have to write what you know. I'd add to this and say write what you like. It's fantasy afterall.

The length of time it takes to write a story is exactly the same length as a piece of string.

Sit down, have a minute, take the weight off. Don't forget to come back.

Some people know I wrote porn. I don’t make it a point to advertise though, anymore than I’d go around advertising my sex life.

My stories are basically my fantasies. They’re things that appeal to me for one reason or another. I don’t think anyone here restricts themselves to things that actually happened. We do fiction here, not journalism, and whether something really happened or not doesn’t affect its quality as a story. I’ve written stories based on other people’s fantasies, but they’re always filtered through my own perception and understanding.

As to how long a story takes, it’s as GC says. It can take a couple of hours, it can take weeks or more, and some just never get finished. Most writers agree that it’s a good idea to put a finished story away for a couple of days, though, and then go through and edit it. The rule is, “Write hot and edit cold.”

And I’m coming to subscribe more and more to Dr. Johnson’s advice to writers: “Go through your writing, and whenever you find a passage that you think is especially fine, strike it out.”

Welcome to Lit.

I have to say

Gotta say it, literotica has one of the friendliest discussion boards - Ive been reading around and nearly everyone gets an answer
Thanks guys for your responses, I do realise that the craft of writing is a personal thing for everyone but hey thats why Im curious about other people....
does that make me a voyeur?
And is that such a bad thing?

First of all, welcome! *hugs*

Okay, question and answer time from my twisted little perspective.

a) Yes, including my family. Made for a rather interesting Saturday evening dinner. Mom trying not to choke on her salad, and Dad and my brother trying to restrain themselves from asking what the site's name was. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.

b) All of the above. Some are real, some I wish were real, some just had to be written.

c) A few things I've written were crowded into my head just begging to come out. (Quiet down in there!) While some, just sorta....stalled, and now languish on my hard-drive, half-finished and taunting the other programs.

Did that help? And, what made you think being a voyeur is bad?

Whisp :rose:

First of all: Hiyah! Welcome to the snake pit. (And hi to Tolyk too, I missed to post a reply in your thread.)

Do people know I write here? Well, some do. It's not something that I bring up, unless they ask. Also there are some people who shouldn't know, for the sake of their own fragile minds. (Although they as characters are featured in some stories of mine.)

If you can start a story and finish it the same day (and it's still somewheat readable), you are about a gazillion times faster than i am. So, you've upped the bets on yourself. I do expect one new story from you at least weekly from now on. :)

All of my friends, associates, peers, superiors and inferiors know what I do but none of my family do - incidentally I've had females ask me to write them into porn and show me how shocked they were by what I wrote.

I use people I know in my stories, but only ever with their consent - actually with their asking me to first. My own fantasies have so far remained in my mind.

It can take me any length of time to write a story - sometimes quickly and sometimes it takes me a long time. Recently I took a respite for several months in the middle of writing a story.

Hi D,

Welcome and have fun.

As to your questions:
Some people know, but not my name here.
See the sig line, it's all in the mind.
Some stories are written in a day, others are waiting to be finished for years.

Doc's advice is sound: always cool down before you have another look and then you submit, or not. :D

Hi Tolyk,

I already read your story. Did I send you feedback? Not sure.

Hola, Dece, and welcome from Perdita. Some answers:

My best friends and one brother know I write for Lit. and are very supportive and appreciative. My sons (in their 20s) don't know.

I don't use actual life scenes here. My Lit. stories are utter fiction, my poems are me. I don't take any reader into consideration, I write for myself but am happy a handful of people like my work. My non-Lit. work is something else though, i.e., "serious".

I'd say my stories take a good week or more, I can spend an hour on a paragraph, even a sentence as I go back and forth moving words about, etc. Some poems took months, leaving them a few days or a week then going back. I think my last poem took a couple weeks, working on it everyday for an hour or so.

I will try to remember to look up your story, please reciprocate with others, that's how a writing colony works.

best to you,

Perdita

Hmm, no, I don't think you sent me any feedback, not that I'm aware of at least. Would love to have some.

so many responses

thanks for all the replies guys
just a few comments/responses, Im too lazy to go back and see exactly who said what Im reaponding to (I know, its rude, its rude) so please bear with me!
Ive been frequenting literotica for years (and turn a lot of other people onto it too. Just havent been one to feedback before, that'll have to change now! So there is no fear of me not reciprocating!

I dont really think for a second that being a voyeur is a bad thing. I was being cheeky more than anything :)

And finally, a story a week! I think I'm capable, but my standard would slip - and I dont know how good the standard is to begin with, I've shared my first story with a few special friends who seem suitably impressed (friends of course have to be!)
I love to write but have to be in the mood for it, I figure knowing someone will read it is a good incentive to entice me to do more. Problem is I need to be inspired, and inspiration is far too few and far between at the moment, maybe when I finish at my current job and can spend my time doing whatever takes my fancy (Ie - looking fr work so I can pay the bills and hopefully writing stroke) I'll have more opportunity to let my mind wander some!

Actually, I'm thinking of quiting writing. I think about it every single day. As an author of erotica I fail misserably. Yet I excel in writing porn. If I had boobs instead of testicles my average rating on each story posted here would probably skyrocket, and even have a chance at winning one of the foolish contests here, but since I don't none of mine ever will. So truthfully, why should I continue on? My health isn't all that great, I'm now on SS disability, and fighting daily bouts with depression. Royalties continue to come in from my legitimate work, but are dwindling in size all the time as I haven't written that way for far too long. And so, I fade away with inevitability.

Now in seriousness in answer to your questions, I write fiction, but it is based in reality, even if not my own. Everybody I know knows that I am a writer, and a poet however not everybody I know knows that I also write porn. It can take me from a half an hour to a day to write a story depending on my interest in it, but it will take days, weeks, or maybe even years to edit it to where I think it is ready for publishing of any kind, here, or elsewhere. So welcome to a career of mindless insecurity as that's all you can truthfully expect when you become an author.

Most people I know, that I consider good friends, know that I write erotica.

I take some things from my real life, but most of my writing is based on my fantasies.

For literotica, most of my stories only take a few hours. For publication which I'll receive payment, the first draft still takes about as long (since lit stuff is all first draft) but then a few days more to a week to shiny up. My novel has been in progress for a year and a half.
