While we're all waiting for the results of K.M.'s poll, thought I'd jump in with this interesting little question before I'm escorted out of the Author's hangout into some obscure corner of Lit-Land.

(Just kidding K.M. I think you really "are" onto something here BTW)

Anyway...with summer, and a whole flock of Holiday's upon us, I had gotten into one of those weird little discussion's while sitting outside in the hot-tub (yeah...even in 90 degree weather it's still fun) with friends, and we began talking about the holidays. Someone mentioned...(must have been me. I was pretty lit) "What if....."

And the "What if" being this.

What if there was a Holiday, and say it was called "free-day" or something. Meaning....on that day, and on that day only. There were no rules...no laws....no anything to keep you from doing anything you wanted....whatever it was...no matter what it was.

What is the ONE thing that you would take advantage of if given that kind of opportunity?

Hey...who knows. This could even turn into an interesting story contest.

Chicklett? KM? The Earl? LOL.......

Seriously though....what is it you'd do if you could?

Hey, Chicklet was the one who came up with the idea. I just took the bit between my teeth is all. I tend to do that, even when it's not wanted.

Now that sounds like the start of a fascinating chain story.

Free-day reminds me of a 7 year old kid who is left home alone for several hours by herself (for the first time) with instructions to behave. What does she do? Behave? Perish the thought. She eats all of the sweets in the house, watches TV too close, bounces on all of the beds, and does everything she's been told she can't do. By the time her whirlwind tour of destruction is done, she realizes she has to clean up the mess fast and she's getting really, really sick from the candy and bouncing.

I tend to think of more challenging themes than the usual run of the mill they got together and a grand time was had by all.

Perhaps a chain story that revolves around a central group of characters who are associated in some way. Students, co-workers, family, whatever. Each author would get one character. They can use the other characters, but they would have one protagonist to write with. Reality type TV show setting might work best because then it would explain why not everyone in the world/nation gets the free-day.

The author would then get to indulge the character in a sexual free-day of some sort. And, somehow, through this experience, the protagonist would learn something about being a better person.

I think the chain would be bound by the setting, the free-day concept, and the fact that the protagonist would have to have been changed by the experience at a character level. So if someone's idea of fun free-day was gay sex, cool, BDSM? cool, fetish? Incest? Good.

My thinking on the subject.

What is the ONE thing that you would take advantage of if given that kind of opportunity?

I would make full constant use of the outdoors. Making love or having rampaging riotous sex against a tree. Sex under the stars. Sex in the forest. Sex in the rain on the lawn (because it's actually heading for Winter here you know ).

And, if you weren't talking about sex....

Then I'd drop everything and head for the deepest spot within the Southern Alps and not come out until the world had ended

actually I have to agree with that...

*BUT* if the world were perfect and no one was gonna come knocking on my door with cruel intentions in mind (while that would be a good non-consent story) I think that I would like to...dumbdumbdumb...go places naked. I like being naked, and even though I am *not* a voyeur or exhibitionist I think that it would be really cool to go be naked places I'm not *supposed* to be naked. Like...WORK. Be at work naked. (not that I would want to be working on a "free day" - this holiday is a paid holiday, right??)

Chain story/Contest

Contest I don't know what we could do with this...it's not really a big enough fetish to have a category on lit for a contest...it's not a *real* holiday (yet) so we can't really include it in the holiday list. Chain story? YES. That would be great. The theme could be the holiday we've created, and how our characters go about celebrating. If you want, make the character you.

Actually...I really do like the idea of everyone taking a character or themselves, having that very special sexual freeday where you CAN do whatever the hell you want to sexually...and NO one can tell you no...we don't do that here. Because in this pretend world of make believe that we as adults all forget to believe in...in this world anyway....everyone else is doing it too!

So we'd just have to choose a random date, find out how many people want in on it...

do you think there'd be a problem with more than one person with the same fantasy? I don't.

Any guidelines anyone wants for this? well duh no sex with children or animals or bloody things unless it's erotic horror type scenario.

Again, I think that this would/will be a really fun chain story.

So our dear goddess Aphrodite is a little bored and floats down to the boring yet stupidly dumb mortal earth and amuses herself by watching some people. They interest her and she decides to give them a treat, granting them each a "free day" to do whatever they wish without consequences. Something like that?

Question: should they know that it's a free day when everything will work for them, or should they just have their wishes granted as if (and actually by) magic?

Hi Sandman, now that I know you a little better, I'll step in here w/o trepidation (though I understand MG's immediate reaction).

I like the idea simply as a chance to fantasy or role play easily w/o the pressure of a long thread commitment, or a story to finish. One might post once, or as often as inspired.

I think I'd do stuff like f**k on public transit (a bus, the subway), or on a park bench, at the opera (vs. the more common movie house), in the aisle of a grocery store or while shoe shopping at Macy's. Maybe (with their permission) I'd go at it w/certain Lit. members, or maybe not, haha.

'Twelfth night' used to be a time for things going upside-down and inside-out. The RC church used to put on the boy-bishops' Mass where urchin youths would be dressed up as bishops and the prelates would take servile roles. It's all over Shakespeare, 'time out of joint', etc. Kings turning into their fools, women into men, death into life, etc. Let's have a Lit. 12th night out of season.

from KM's post it sounded like she wanted to group in the stories to be connected. From your post it sounds like you want the people who are writing the stories to be limited. Are we excluding people...or are you excluding me? (sniff...sniff)

...Free-day is an already "established" day. So lets not waste a lot of time developing how the hell it came about.

I know you guys already did the through time thing in "The Talisman" but it might be fun to do "The First Free-Day" just because we *are* going to have to let our readers know what's going on...right? Maybe we could develope one or two paragraphs explaining it that we could put in the beginning of the first chapter (if KM's okay with that)

If it's free-day for the entire world, then the characters in the various stories in the chain do not have to be bound to on another in some way. It also makes it funny. After all, what if my sexual fantasy was to have you, Sandman, in a torried sexual liason with the Earl? Wouldn't your free-day get you out of it?

By "limited" I didn't mean to exclude anyone that wants to participate actually. But I do think we should at least get a show of hands pretty soon here on the number of folks who really would like to join in this interesting undertaking. As Perdita mentioned....(I still want to know what that means BTW), I like the idea of everyone working in their own ideas of what "free-day" would mean to them, centered around whatever premise K.M. decided to come up with. Yeah...I agree, she needs to establish the reason/purpose behind it...or it wouldn't really be a story. Hell...if I did it, we'd still be waiting for the second cumming (so to speak) as I do tend to get a bit "wordy" on the reason we got there to begin with.

So....that being said.....I'm thinking along the lines of waking up on "freeday" and more or less giving a blow-by blow description (bad pun) of what my day would turn out like.

I would say come up with a reason why these people might get a free-day. Divinity, TV game show, whatever. These people don't have to have anything in common other than the free-day. Perhaps we could divy up the pantheon of gods or the ones in Vallhalla (or both) and each person gets the gift from the god. Like Ares gives a warrior a free day, that sort of thing.

I don't mind the notion of nation-wide or global free-day holiday, except that it brings up too many suspension-of-disbelief logistical problems to my mind. It's possible we could just get the day, but if then we'd have to figure out how the characters knew they had the day. Did they just know it? That's too convenient.

So, let's see, ideas:

Rich and famous people
Superhumans
Aliens
Lottery winners
Ed McMahon and the Prize Patrol
Zapped by lightning
Mind control issues
We could divvy these up as well (one person gets the gods, one wins it on a game show, another is kidnapped and released by aliens).

Personally I really like (or at least used to) mythology (okay I still do I just don't remember as much about it)

You've read those books...what'retheycalled...hold on (clicking on amazon.com...) The Long Dark Tea-Time Of The Soul by Douglas Adams? I can't remember if it's the first in the series or the second that Thor is around. Anyway, all the Norse gods and goddesses are still around, just mostly unnoticed and living their lives like "normal" humans. Odin is in a nursing home, for instance. What if it's something like that, forgotten gods and goddesses still on the earth, and one of them (probably zeus or apollo with his friggin' showers of light) comes down and like gets the hots for some woman. OOH OOH IDEA

The god or goddess in question (there could be more than one, and indeed, we could each use a different one) falls in lust with our character and decides to grant them a day of whatever they please...so as to seduce them, you see. In our stories the mortal probably won't even notice the gods and goddesses because (cough athiest) they don't believe (cough athiest) that they exist.
