It makes the MC interesting if they are "above average" or larger than average. Males have big dicks and muscles, females have big tits and bodies we lust for. It all depends on the author and who he is catering to. Some authors do write more reality based stories where the characters are more average.

Ever watched a tv show in which characters actually talk like real people? Ever kept track of how many times you "um" and "ahh" when you talk, and let, unless it's for a good reason, we don't see that on screen. It's a stylised version of reality, intended to keep the audience interested and continue watching.

Writing erotica, your typical reader is not wanting to read about every day life, they are wanting to escape from the reality of their 5" cocked husband/boyfriend. The problem within amateur erotica seems to mostly to be in using implausibly precise actual measurements, not in the assertion of uncommon size. It drags the reader out because we assume narration is usually from someone in the scene's perspective, even in third person. You can't even reliably tell a performer's size in porn videos, so hearing that someone is "nine inches long" just makes you think, "Oh yeah, what's this third-person-limited narration doing going around with an invisible ruler?" Just tell us he was bigger than she was used to and he had to stop mid-thrust to let her get used to it, and leave it at that.

Of course this isn't the point the OP was making, its just a pet peeve. Back on topic: You'd expect not to read anything at allabout cock size if a guy was in the normal range. The story focus would be on everything else other than his size, because the size is unremarkable in either direction. Looked at like that every story that isn't explicit with size is 'setting its sights lower', and that's probably still a slim majority of them (*rushes off to test the hypothesis by reading three dozen stories for a representative sample*).
