I have no real comment, the action speaks for itself.

Any comments?

Happy?

The sacred Jewish site regarded as the grave of the biblical patriarch Joseph has been turned into a pile of rubble by Arab vandals, according to Israeli officials.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon confirmed Sunday that the large stone marking the grave was destroyed some time during the past two weeks, the Israeli News Network said.

Minister Natan Sharansky wants the foreign ministry to publicize photos of the desecrated site, which is in the Palestinian Authority-controlled town of Nablus, the biblical Shechem.

"If we would have razed the gravesite of one of the founders of Islam, billions of Muslims would have taken to the streets," Sharansky said. "It's inconceivable that the world should not know about this travesty."

The Oslo Accords put the site under Israeli jurisdiction, but on Oct. 7, 2000, then-Prime Minister Ehud Barak ordered a unilateral retreat, based on a Palestinian agreement to protect the site.

But within hours, smoke was seen billowing from the tomb as a crowd burned Jewish prayer books and other articles. With pickaxes and hammers they began to tear apart the stone building. Two days later the dome of the tomb had been painted green and bulldozers were clearing the area.

Israeli authority was restored to the site during last April's Operation Defensive Shield, but Israeli worshippers are not allowed to visit and it is not regularly guarded.

Members of the Hassidic Breslover sect have been arrested in attempts to reach the tomb.

The Od Yosef Chai Yeshiva, a Jewish center for learning that was closed down at the time of the initial Israeli retreat, issued a press release last week demanding the "immediate safeguarding" of the tomb. The center also asked that it be allowed to reopen its doors on the site.

Yehuda Liebman, the head of Od Yosef Chai Yeshiva, told the Jerusalem Post that while the attacks have become more severe, the grave had always been left intact.

Israeli government spokesman Ra'anan Gissin said that the government will find a way to protect the site, but the Israel Defense Forces said it has no plans to secure or guard it because such action is too costly.

Gissin said the desecration "shows the moral bankruptcy of the Palestinian Authority and points to the critical need for a change in leadership."

Israeli archeologists say they have convincing documentation of the site's authenticity, dating to biblical times. The book of Joshua says, according to the New International Version, "Joseph's bones, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the tract of land that Jacob bought for a hundred pieces of silver from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem. This became the inheritance of Joseph's descendants."

For a structure to have that long of a run is still impressive nonetheless. It's a shame when archaeology becomes a victim of war though. :(

Oh, yeah, there were bones in it...*yawn*

Yeah, and Stone Henge is just a bunch of rocks.

Fuckers.

Bunch of BIG rocks...get it straight!

Maybe one of these days people will stop fussing over old stuff, and grow the hell up. It's some bones and a building, it isn't anything important.

And some day people wouldn't care if you burned an American flag or the Bible for warmth. People will die over such stupid shit, you're right.

I don't care, if I'm cold, and all I have to burn is a Bible or flag, absolutely I'm torching it. Hell, I'd do it anyways, its only cloth or paper.

People do kill and die over stupid shit like that every day...don't you think its about time they stopped?

Probably several somebodies.

Then that should have been the thrust of the report, not some old building being vandalized. Its a shame, but lives are more important than stuff.

Now it's just a matter of getting them to realize how stupid it is.

True that, true that.

Hmmm...how to teach people that lives count more than symbols, and that symbols are worthless when you betray the values behind them? The Bible obviously couldn't do it...it warns against idolatry, and then people turn around and treat it as an idol.

It's the single biggest hypocrisy facing modern Christianity today. So many people forget that the bible is just a book, and it's only a guidline, not the whole message. You have to let God into your heart in a very real way. Using some obscure passage in Isiah or Samuel to prove a point is not what the authors had in mind.

Okay, so let's.....

Destroy the rock at Mecca, after all it's just a rock....

Taking out vengeance on a rock would be equally stupid. We're still emotionally investing in rocks here.

Those vandals....

Just extended the bloodbath for a couple of more years. Now the Jews have a new example of the consequences of trusting the Palestinians.

On this I must disagree with you Johnny.

Just because Christianity isn't something that you happen to believe in some do. It is important to some of us. Those bones are important. That gravesite was important.

And no I don't advocate for there to be retribution and lives lost because of it.. nor would I want to see anyone destroy Islamic monuments.

It isn't about holding up this gravesite and idolizing it above humans or above God, it isn't as simple or easy as that.

I am amazed that there is a monument to anything religious still standing over there.

slackers

Well since Archeology is one of my great interests in life (thank you very much George Lucas for Indiana Jones) anyone that thinks destroying important, ancient relics and artifacts is no big deal is a complete scum-bag in my eyes.

The fighting between the Arabs & the Jews will be the downfall of civilization.

Both sides lie like cheap rugs; I don't believe anyone anymore.

Symbols cause inner growth. Many will look at it as just a bunch of rocks, but if one person looks and says, I am a piece of the whole, just as Joseph was and this tomb reminds me of that, then the reason to preserve is there. It is not worshiping idols, simply a catalyst for lbeing, learning and personal growth.

I have a tendency to treat waterfalls, oceans, mountains, leaves, flowers and small rocks the same way.

Zen.

I think it is a shame when anything is destroyed for no reason...wait there was a reason hatrid. I am not of the jewish or christian faith but I still think that it is wrong to destroy markers in history...or any other creation. Energy when into the creation of this tomb, it is a waste to destory it.
