2 reasons: people like poop, and there is a huge aftermarket for video rentals and cable TV. Let's take those one at a time.

1) People like "entertainment" that doesn't challenge them. It feels safe to them, because they can figure out the whole movie in the first 10 minutes. They also get to feel smarter than the characters. Plus, if you have to get up and go pee, you don't miss anything.

2) Have you ever wanted to rent a movie, and they didn't have the one you liked? You go and rent a crappy one instead! Plus...hey, I have like 200 channels on cable, and there is no way they can fill all those hours with good movies...plenty of room for crap!
