i am surprised this wasnt posted before.

on friday the author of harry potter did a book reading in new york followed by a question and answer section. one of the questions was "did dumbledore every find true love?" to which she answered "actually dumbledore was gay."

first their was dead silence and then applause. some on the internet have suspected this for some time but this is the first time it was said by the author.

dumbledore was one of the most important characters in the series having died at the end of the 6th book and having almost the entire 7th book revolve around him after death. if you havnt read the books and now want to do not expect him to have any gay moments or tendencies. he is a 110 year old(at least) headmaster of a private school for wizards and behaves himself professionally.

at the end of the comment Rowling had this too say. "some people dont like my books being published and i guess this gives them just one more reason to hate me."

I am surprised you posted it, since I couldn´t care less about a fictional old wizard fart is gay. Since I don´t give a rats ass about it at all. But at the same time, I don´t even care about the whole book series. In reality those it shocks are probably those who don´t like the GLBT area in the first place.

my problem was, there was no real set-up for this. Is she planning on defining the orientation of every character? It served no purpose imo.

I find it pointless for her to say. If he was never in a romantic or sexual situation in the books, then his orientation has nothing to do with the story. Feels more to me like someone saying something for attention than revealing some important hidden aspect of a character.

I don't know. That was a fleeting thought of mine while reading the 7th book and reading about his relationship with Grindewald. The "revelation" does put a new spin on a lot of things in the various books.

(Hell... as a friend of mine said... maybe it wasn't the horcrux that blackened his hand. Maybe it was some sort of kinky wizard sex gone badly)

Or maybe the other guy just forgot to wipe. I mean, they're wizards and full of magic, right? So even their shit could be powerful stuff. ;)

Well I think it's awesome. I wish she HAD alluded to it in the books.

If she had, I would support this announcement. However, since there is no reference to any level of homosexual affiliation for any character, it seems more like a stunt to me.

Remember that she had written the family trees and all of the background information on each and every character years ago. She probably even had their sexual orientations down even if she had never mentioned it.

I, personally, had not much considered that Dumbledore didnt' have a signicant other. From my understanding, that is a norm in British boarding schools, that the faculty are usually unmarried. I do find that she alluded to Dumbledore, however, at least in the last book. She mentions that Dumbledore tells Harry that Grindelwald lit him with a passion or something like that. It sounded very intimate.

um......... why are people freaking out about this? I don't get it, I suppose. It's just a character in a FICTIONAL book..... not like he's a real person.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks this...

Personally, I really don't care whether he (or anyone else) is homosexual or not. He was (and is) a great character in a fictional story just as many homosexuals of both genders are great individuals in real life.

Male or female, homo or hetero... it makes no difference. Who you are and what you do as a person is what matters, not who or what you find sexually arrousing. (provided it ain't kids or animals or something... let's limit it to consenting adults anyway)

As to whether or not Rowling had this planned or it's a stunt, who knows and (since the books are done now), what difference does it make in any real sense?

she did allude to it in her last book. she said that he was smitten with grindewald and after he left he was deeply depressed. there were little hints in the book but nothing serious this is a book that is child oriented. and not even the adults have relationships. the only ones who even kiss in the whole series are about 5 or 6 kids and only 4 central to the theme of the book.

Who's freaking out? I just think it's cool.

Personally IMHO, I thought Gandalf was the better of the two gay wizards. This whole stunt is just JK jumping on the gay wizard band wagon. Sorry love, but your just a few years to late, jeez

Gandalf is gay? He was portrayed in the movie by Ian McKellen, an actor who's gay, but that doesn't make Gandalf himself gay, right?

well he was a lil bit TO familiar with aragorn and when saruman slapped him about, you do have to wonder whether it was about the one ring or perhaps a lil jealousy

IDK - one of my roommates is a HP freak, and he's been talking about it for the past week..... plus, it's all over the internet.

I write a lot of fanfiction, adult level, and there had been a great deal of speculation as to Dumbledore's orientation. The two popular theories: he was gay or in love with Minerva. I didn't agree with the McGonagal pairing.

Honestly, he could be a bit flamboyant (gay stereotype) and take a look at his robes! The books describe his outfits as wild at times.

I think it's a great start towards opening people up more towards homosexuality. I'm hoping to find a publisher that doesn't mind same sex pairings in books - even fantasy and scifi.

So far, most reaction towards Dumbledore's orientation has been favorable, which has pleased a lot of people.

You're cracking me up. Totally agree. Noticed the Aragorn thing right off. Think Saruman was an ex lover?

And when he came back after the fall into the pit, you could tell he was resurrected because his new robes were so FABULOUS.

I thought I was the only one who noticed all that.

well who hasn't been jilted for a younger guy

Any artform that reflects real life is a good thing - or else it would lump us in with the animals. And most of us humans love and/ or prefer to think they are a civilized lot.

I have a crush on Sir Ian McKellen. woohoo!

:D
