Until today humanity has been clueless about when a watermelon is really ripe. Today I discovered the answer, and share it becuz I'm a sweetheart of a guy.

Some of you know that I'm an urban farmer. I grow all kinds of stuff, and study what I obeserve and learn from books. So I've been studying melons, cucumbers, zucchini, etc.

Watermelons have pale colored undersides that rest on the ground. But I saw something else. When the watermelon is at the peak of ripeness the tissue under the light spot changes to bright yellow. Its the melons way of alerting you that its going to rot soon, and you better harvest now! All the melons, cukes, etc. do it.

So I tested my idea on a variety of melons, and all of them with bright yellow spots were ripe, red, and sweeter. No losers in the test sample.

I'm talking YELLOW not pastel yellow.

Yeah, but does that work for melons in the store too? Not all of us are Outstanding in our Field.

I got the sample from the store.

The conventional wisdom is watermelons dont get riper after picking, so my hypothesis oughta apply to store melons, too.

I observe that the right yellow color jumps out from the rest.
