Yes: I believe that consenting adults and children of reasonable maturity, should be able to cross the street at their own risk for time, convenience and reduction of wear-and-tear on the button on the crosswalk.

No: Rules are meant to be followed. Yes, some people could cross and be fine, but a lot of people can't. If we all use the crosswalks, even on an empty street, our society will be more safe and a better place to live.

No other, sorry, this is too yes or no.

Most of the time I use the crosswalk and only cross with the light. For me it is not about obeying the law so much as it is about being safe (yes, this from the guy who makes it a habit to go 100+ MPH at least once during each motorcycle ride). Besides, if I get hit in a crosswalk crossing with the light, it makes it a lot easier to sue the person.

I have almost been hit a number of times even in the crosswalk, and I have twice seen the results of someone jumping out in front of cars and getting hit. Both times were kids and both got very serious head injuries that put them in the hospital for months - one kid I could actually see his brains, the other kid's head got caught under the tire of the car as it pushed his head along the pavement.

Yes

But then jay walking isn't an offence in the UK to the best of my knowledge.

Mind you it does scare me when I see mums with prams dicing with death crossing main roads when a perfectly adequate crossing point is just yards away. Adults can excercise their right to choose. Baby's and small kids should be able to live long enough to excercise the right to choose.

It's been 3 years and I'm still not used to the California laws. We had jaywalking in New Orleans only we called it "upstructing traffic". We (NOPD) never really enforced the law though.

See Melon Collie.. This is why I say look both ways.

Stop imposing your fascist ideals on me. I don't wanna look both ways. I thought this was a street not a Turkish prison.

Maybe my Philly streets are tamer than yours.

If your an adult or over the age of lets say...13 go ahead and cross anywhere at your own risk. But if you have a young kid with you for god's sake use the damn crosswalk.

I'm saying a mature and responsible 13 could... some (Not many) but some 13 year olds, I'd make sure had some assistance.

Alright... don't look those ways... I bet you're not even going to wear a reflector vest!

Reflector vest you say? What colors are available?

Will it make me look fat?

It's bright oragne...

But it's a slimming oragne!

Orange doesn't really match my hair and I'm sure it would be murder to get a nice pair of appropriate shoes. Have you no other options? A belt maybe?

What if I want Yes but do not look both ways before walking?
If you don't look both ways then I get to arrest you, put you in handcuffs, and take you home for your punishment! :D :p

I never was much for rules and restrictions. Put me on the list with the other jay walkers. I do look both ways of course. I am lazy, not stupid.

Uh, you can forget about the belt thing sd. I like to live on the edge, what can I say?

Pfft.

I do look both ways thank you very much. My vote is on the behalf of all those I wish wouldn't.

My hood has too many one-way streets where drivers don't bother looking both ways before crossing. Pedestrians need to be alert and agile.
In the city, you soon learn that the best time to cross is the time after the last car has passed and before your light changes to "walk". After the "walk" you've got to dodge the turning cars.

I feel like he's been doing quite well in the attention department lately. sd412 is like a pretty little butterfly emerging from his coccoon.
