So hey...I have this major thing going on in my life that I haven't told you guys about. And you're my friends, so I feel remiss in not saying anything!

I will be going to Japan for 10 weeks this summer to do an internship. I will be tutoring deaf Japanese students in American Sign Language and English. This will be happening in Tsukuba, home to the Tsukuba University of Technology, a technical school with programs for deaf students (and blind students). Everything is 90% confirmed, I'm just waiting for the on-site supervisor to email me back with his e-signature on the final forms. (After two months of planning, I'm not buying any plane tickets until it's 110% confirmed!)

I will be living in a dorm at the university, and using their LAN. I have NO clue if they censor internet there...obviously Japan has a thriving porn industry, but I don't know if this particular university has controls on their system! If they do block porn sites, I will only be able to get here through proxies, which will mean I will probably not be posting as much.

This is a big adventure ahead of me...I'm still hoping everything works out. :)

Awesome news Etoile! Have fun. I lived there back in 1992, it was a wild place, one of my most memorable travel destinations.

What a fantastic opportunity for you. I sure hope you'll send us dispatches to let us know what you're doing.

I will manage to report back somehow! Even if it is just a matter of posting in this thread a few times a week, I will definitely come around.

This opportunity actually fell into my lap, I wasn't looking for it...I was recommended by my academic advisor (who is also the chair of the Deaf Studies dept) and the career center folks contacted ME! My first reaction was "things like this don't happen to me" but that's because I don't go looking for them. Now that it IS happening to me, I'm a little scared!

It's going to be so hard to be away from my wife for so long! I am making her promise we will email every day and call as much as possible and hopefully I can get her hooked up with a webcam so I can see her. :)
 
That's awesome news :) Yay for being headhunted!

And I think though, that 10 weeks will fly by, because when you're not working there will be so much to see and do and explore.

What a exciting news!
As for the internet censorship in the dorm ... I have no idea but I'm sure that you'll quickly meet students that knows how to get around it. ;)

I saw $450 last minute round trip tickets to Tokyo a few days ago. It would have been worth the pile of trouble at work for calling in last minute to go. :)

That's such a special honor for you. Not only will you be doing a good thing by teaching students to sign, you will get to enjoy and explore another culture in the process.

I can only imagine the feeling of being in a foreign country, living as they do. That would be so special. And Japan would be the ideal country, in my opinion. They have a culture that is quite different from ours, yet I understand they love the U.S. I've heard they love our western movies and actors like John Wayne. I can't imagine Japanese cowboys.

I would think it's also very different not to see many, if any blonds or red heads. I agree, those 10 weeks are going to fly by in a flash.

I went to Japan for two weeks the summer of '07, and they were probably some of the best two weeks of my life. You'll love it!
 
I booked my airline tickets today. Nonstop from Washington Dulles to Tokyo, leaving May 13th and coming back on August 5th. Ho. Lee. Crap. :D
