apanese scientists said Tuesday they had produced a mouse that tweets like a bird in a genetically engineered "evolution" which they hope will shed light on the origins of human language.

They produced a mouse with a differently shaped larynx. It squeaks and chirps the same way normal mice do and for the same reasons-- but the sounds are different when they come out. That's not birdsong.

The research they are doing-- raising two different-sounding mouse strains together to see if the two can communicate- is interesting.
