The den at my parents house has a very similar setup regarding those beams on the ceiling. Their house was built in 1963.

My tip was the direction of the staircase. They usually run parallel to the floor joists.

I was thinking of putting in some hardwood floors. So I ripped up a strip of carpet then realized how heavy carpet is. The project is on hold until I noodle out this development.

Take your carpet knife and cut the carpet into, say, 6 foot runs and roll it up. Easy peasy there sailor.
