In the last day or so JaFo the moderator first voiced his issues with this series of threads. He first asked for more discussion, then when he got that discussion, promptly announced that the thread was against the rules and cancelled it. It took 5 years, 3 million plus views and in excess of 20,000 posts to reach that conclusion!

Personally, I think that the thread had a lot of garbage, much of it constantly repeated, but given its popularity its demise seems extraordinarily precipitate, and posters should have at least been given a thorough explanation and a chance to sort out any issues.

That thread was closed for a number of violations, not the least of which ....

  • Copyrighted material for which the submitter is not the owner of the copyright, or for which the submitter does not have an explicit license from the copyright owner to publish the work at Literotica.
  • Works that contain advertisements, outside links, domain names, or outside promotions of any kind within the description, body text, or audio (including “See my profile for…”).
  • Teasers, partial works, excerpts of offsite works, or any work that appears to be a promotion for other platforms.
  • Visual representations (photographs or video) of any real person engaged in “actual sexually explicit conduct” as defined by 18 U.S.C. 2257.

  • Per the above, we do not allow the posting of hardcore, dick pics, vagina closeups, sex toys being used, etc.
  • Image must not contain URLs or other advertisements.
  • You must have a legal right from the copyright owner to post any images - i.e. photographs/drawings that you yourself created and/or have a legal license or other legal permission to post. You retain all legal rights to your images when posting them on Literotica. You are only granting us a non-exclusive license to display them for as long as you leave them up on your account.
Anyone caught repeatedly violating these guidelines may have their image posting privileges revoked or have their account banned without notice. You can also be held legally responsible for posting copyright protected content by the copyright holder, so please do not post anything that you do not own.

That thread was literally thousands of images, some of them hardcore scraped from another forum with the URL in plain view.

Image and posting rules were posted in the stickies at the top of the forum days prior.

There are a number of other threads that are primarily pictures gathered from the web without the rights holders' permission. Those posters need to take note as those threads will be trimmed down too.

Yes, I've posted that kind of thing too ... in the past.

Remember, this is a discussion forum on a literary site, not a pictures only bulletin board.

Folks, your issues are with the rules of the site. Take a good look at them. You can find them at the bottom of every single page of the forum. All the complaining in the world is it going to change the rules of the site. The fact that the rules have not been enforced before does not make it wrong to do so now.

I do not dispute the facts at all. My issue was the fact that I believe that as a courtesy at least, this post should have appeared before action was taken, not as an afterthought. In addition the position of Lit's owners is bullshit. If they genuinely wanted to get rid of copyrighted material there are numerous other forums with wall to wall pictures. Just applying the rules to one forum and claiming the highground is nonsense.

JaFo is taking the defence of the bureaucrat: reference to the "rules," which are breached with impunity dozens of times everyday on numerous other Lit forums. It would not be difficult to programme all pictures to be removed from the board after say a week or so, but the fact is, the management talks a good game on copyright but when it comes to genuine action, they make very few spasmodic attempts, and leave a patsy, JaFo in this case, to be criticised.

And just for a laugh. This "Not a pictures only Bulletin Board" is in fact operated as part of a Bulletin Board.

There were numerous posts of caution, but it turned into a mess of arguing and insults, so a bunch of posts were deleted before the lock.

Things will likely loosen up again at some point. There was essentially no moderation at all for two years or so. The result was a wild west open range clusterfuck of misbehavior that made it necessary to take initial action that some see as too strong.

The main focuses right now are underage, incest, excessive explicit images posted or linked by the hundreds or thousands and personal contact information. The less explicit images will need to be reduced also, but those aren't the priority just yet.

As for other boards, feel free to PM Laurel and volunteer. GLBT is open since it was the same Mod as here and no one knows where they went or why. Visual Arts, Online Role Play and Sexual Role Play are in the same situation as none of those Mods have been seen for months.

The Politics and General boards are unmoderated by design, but violations can still be reported and Laurel will act on those reports as she sees fit.

Poacher turned gamekeeper then? Even more annoying that you didn't see fit to censor your own posts!

And please sort out that annoying "Oops! We ran into some problems." shit!!

I think that you and the site owners JAFo, are missing the point a bit. If posting copyright material is agin the rules, it is up to the site owners to sort it out, not volunteer mods. You effectively are covering for their inadequate action and taking the rap for it from members. "Unmoderated by design" is total bollocks. It would not take programming genius to take down every single copyrighted picture after they were a week or two old.

My preference would be for every single picture to be removed after it was a week old. It would show a bit of good faith on the copyright issue and clean out 24 years of garbage.

It kinda does. People have an outlet. There are all kinds of fetishes in this world and people found an outlet there.
The beach I go to has explicit rules about no alcohol and no dogs. There are no exceptions. But if you go on the beach before 9 or after 5, you will see dogs everywhere and no one bothers you. If you are discreet, you can drink on the beach between 9 and 5. Outside those hours, the beach patrol drives right by.
I spent my entire career in law enforcement. People the wield their power because they have it are always problems in law enforcement.
Ending one of the most popular threads on this board is a flex. It will drive people away.
Bring on the Brute Squad.

I understand what you’re saying, but Laurel and Manu aren’t responsible for setting or enforcing rules at that beach. People speed on the highway without getting tickets, people break rules without consequences. It happens all the time.

We are removing photos that appear to be of underage persons, photos that appear to have been shared without consent, photos that break copyright (by the way, many of these are being removed by a computer, not the mods), personal contact information, etc. All of this is at the direction of the owners of the site with the goal of keeping participants and the site safe. Their site, their rules, and their selection of mods.

You were talking generally about enforcing the rules. Jaywalking is illegal but rarely enforced. Laws in civilized society are.made by people. While this is someone's business, they need people for there business to be successful. Giving power to the Gestapo is not a way to keep people around. Some have already fled.

Honestly, if they are fleeing because they aren’t allowed to post images that the site doesn’t want shared, then okay. I understand folks being upset because the forum has generally been unmoderated. But, if they want to post things that the site owners don’t want posted, that they have clearly stated that they don’t want posted, then maybe another site will better meet their needs.

And as I mentioned somewhere else, it's also very likely against the rules of the other sites the pictures are being poached from. That really isn't up to us, unless those sites complain. Then Admin deals with it and the member won't be here at all any more.

Some see harsh rules enforcement. I see guiding the site away from past problems.

Read the Sticky about Picture Threads.

You have a job to do. I respect that.

Doing a difficult job is one thing. Relishing being “the new sheriff in town” is something else. I think you know this really……

Not exactly sure what you think you’re going to accomplish here. JaF0 is doing a great job as a mod and I’m really glad they are in the role.
