Does anyone know what kind of ivy a regular ivy houseplant is? I'm trying to confirm that it's not toxic to cats before I put it in their reach.

I'm not positive but it seems that it is in fact toxic. Not deadly but will make them sick.

Thanks - I just found the information. I pretty much know zip about plants, so I didn't even know what to look up.

For any other non-green thumbed types out there, these sites may prove useful:

The common ivy houseplant (at least in this part of the country) is a Pothos Ivy, and it is toxic to cats.

Actually, there is this dog outside that has an annoying habit of using our yard as his personal restroom. Maybe I'll test it out on him first...

:p

Mischka is biassed against the following.......

(how could you not love this face)

OK, you made me crack. He's adorable. I'm really not biased against dogs, I just have an affinity for cats. Besides, I believe that dogs need yards, and as I live in a condo, cats are the perfect pet choice for me.

And *bratcat*, I'm with you. Even silk plants die under my care. But I was hoping that an ivy might make it. I've heard they're virtually impossible to kill. Ah, well. Maybe I'll just get another picture/art piece for the wall.

Miscka,

I'm not much of a cat person, dog guy all the way. I live on the edge of a 5 acre field so i have more than enough room. You are right about dogs, better to have a cat in confined areas.

Some plants i have had luck with.....

Cacti - Will not die under extreme distress.

African Violets - Stonger than you think, will wilt and come right back.

Jade tree - get a small one, give it good drainage and it should do fine. Indirect sun.

Rubber tree - see Jade care.

Sunflowers - grow 'em inside. Add color for awhile then just toss 'em out.

Mold - Leave some food around. No care needed.

Ivy..... Hedra helix Toxic

HOWEVER, no worries, because unless your cats have a fucked up sense of smell, they won't eat it.

I grow it, and they sniff and look away, then go chew on my Ficus tree, and pygmy date palm.

What I suggest is that you should grow wheat grass for your cats to eat, to deter them from your ornimentals.

Just go to a Seed and Feed and buy Wheat grass and Rye grass seed.
Buy a troph like, plastic planter and fill with soil. (it is good to have two planters so you can rotate)
Soak seeds in water overnight in a covered dish, and then strain them the next day. Sprinkle them on the soil, and then cover the troph.

In a few days they'll start to emerge. Once the seeds have sent out the radicle (emerging root) and pumule (emerging shoot) you can put in a window or under a light and in a week or two, your cats will start to have a snack, and man do they love it. They won't want anything else. I do about 6 trophs a year because they end up mangling the plants and you have to start over. You'll get into the habit of starting them before the one in use is kaput.

Growing toxic plants shouldn't be a problem anyway, because animals can smell the toxic chemicals present in the plant tissue and they are usually repulsed by it.

To be safe, grow a snack for them and they'll love you for it.

Lavy,

That pooch is so cute. Those big eyes and smile on his/her face. I have been told that greyhounds are affectionate, sensitive dogs.

Starfish,

Your kitties are spoiled rotten, shame on you. The picture of a cat grazing on grass in the house is odd, to me. Weirdo :p

Who is going to vouch for Mischka? She seems a little shady to me.

Af as Never's opinion on dog attachment...doesnt she have a love of Star Trek?...enough said.;)

It would be difficult for me to have the same name as my pooch. Always yelling my own name, and how would i know when he was talking back to me?
