I dont think I'm ever going to write another story again. If I do write a story I'll only write one for my own enjoyment. I wrote one bad story a few years ago and I still get bad reviews from it. Am I doing the right thing by not putting them up on the web?

Sweetheart, it happens. There's always going to be some troll, somewhere, with an appetite for your destruction. Just ignore them, tell them to piss off, whatever... and you can always skip on over and your our RockNRollFantasy chain. I've already promised to shred any trolls that attack anyone in there. But seriously... I once got feedback that was so... well, let's just say I've had REALLY bad feedback. Still do. Just ignnore them.
 Don't let the bastards keep you down, babe.

Hey fellow Kansan. Angel has the right advice.

Try your best to ignore the morons. They exist, they are everywhere, and even if you write a "perfect" story grammatically and erotically you'll still have some asshole complain because the guy didn't cum on her face.

Ahem.

:rose:

Is it honestly bad?

Okay. I'm going to take the opposite tack. You say it was a "bad" story. Is it? Really. Not in their opinion, but in yours. Is it a bad story? Why?

Did you know it was bad before you posted it? Did you get people to read it? Did these readers tell you it was bad and if they did...why didn't you listen to them?

Next: Here's the raw truth. Putting ANYTHING of yourself out there is a bad idea. Because anything you put out there is at risk of being criticized, disliked, damaged. If you knit a scarf and wear it, someone might tell you they think it's a shitty scarf.

On the internet, this is multiplied by 1000. Because if someone comes up to you face to face and says, "I don't like your scarf, you don't know shit about knitting!" they're risking getting yelled at or hit by you or your friends. They're risking a fight. But post a picture of that scarf on the internet and not only will it be seen my a million more people--but anyone who wants to can say what they like with NO fear at all of you being able to argue with them, or knowing who they are or coming after them if they say something nasty. They can say something awful to you just for the fun of it. Not even because it's true or they really think that. Just for the fun of it.

Is it worth putting your stories out there? Well, I think it is. I think it is because I've had the other experience. If you publish something in, say, a magazine, you may never know if anyone reads it. You may never get word one from anyone telling you they liked or hated it. You could completely change someone's life, save it even, and you'd never, ever know.

Post it here and you KNOW people read it. They tell you. You don't have to wonder for the rest of your life..."Did anyone outside of the editor read my story?" That, in the end, is what you have to decide. Is it more important to you that your stuff gets read, even if it gets bad reviews...or do the bad reviews hurt so badly that you'd rather no one else read it?

Last question: that bad story of yours...can you remove it? Take it off the internet and give it to an editor (or a new editor if the old one failed you). Stories on the internet at least have that advantage--they can be changed, edited, made better. In this way, they are superior to a bad novel which hits the shelves, there in print, and copies remain of it forever for people to laugh at.

I appreciate the fact that if I post a story and realize from the comments that it is bad, I can make it better, I hope. And so can you...if it's really, honestly bad.

No!

The first story is the worst. Then you get better. I look back at the first story I posted and cringe. It's a learning experience and after a few 'good' ones are posted go back and re-write your 'bad' one. It's what I plan to do.

I agree with Togitc. The only way to improve one's writing is to write.

If you felt your story was good and your critiques are of the "would've been better if someone had gotten pregnant" varety, I would ignore them. If, however, your inner critic tells you that the story wasn't all it could have been, that's all right. Just set about finding ways to make it better.

I agree. Never give up on writing. The stories I thought were my best are not rated, the ones I wondered about have hot ratings. I ignore the trolls. They're going to hit you according to their fetishes and how THEY think you're story should evolve.
Just enjoy what you write. Have fun with it. Ignore the trolls and write. As long as you're happy with the story, it doesn't matter what the trolls think. They hit us all.

... And, if YOU think the story is bad- really, honestly you do- delete it from the site. You have the right to do that, you know.
Even if you plan on re-writing it some time, you can still remove it now.

Amen. Sometimes one must make some painful but necessary cuts.

...

I would not let some moron with nothing better to do upset you so much. People who flame aren't interested in giving you any constructive criticism, they are interested in lashing out and becoming a troll. If you take the attitude of never posting another story, then you are letting this loser win. I would not give him/her the satisfaction.

The only reason the trolls flame us so badly is because they can't write anything noteworthy themselves. Don't let them win. Write your ass off if it makes you happy, because that's all that really matters. Trust me, you will improve your skill with each piece you put out there. Ignore the assholes, take in the advice. Kick all forms of literary ass. ;)

Read one of my earlist stories. Then read one of latest. There is a perceptible difference. That has come about, in part because I have written a lot, in part because I have been given good advice and in part because Ihave grown as a writer.

Writing is a two part endeavor. Part one is the skill and mastery of technique. Part two is the creative element. To a point, they go hand in hand. As my mastery of the skills involved has progressed, my willingnes to tackle more intricate themes has progressed.

Even the most brilliant shipwright cannot build a ship with out his tools. The skills are your tools. Without them, you cannot produce anything. The only way to get the skill, like most any skill, is to practice, practice, practice.

Once you have the tools, the boat you design is limited only by your imagination.

Rob, sweetie, if you need an editor you can send it on to me. I'm brutally honest but not cruel. *grins and skips off*
