I believe the best firewalls are free. I've used Zone Alarm and Tiny Personal Firewall. You can download either one for free here:

I strongly recommend virus software.. Norton is fine. You should never have to pay for updates. Mine is 18 months old and I can still get updates for free. Whatever you do, don't buy Norton Anti-Virus packaged with two or three other Norton programs. You will probably never use them, and some of them just plain suck.
Download.com has some excellent info on all different types of software. Check it out before you decide which to buy.
