Free speech protections exist to protect politically offensive speech from a despotic government. A private organization like Twitter is not subject to them.

If I give a dinner party, I expect my guests to behave with a certain decorum. If some of them start abusing my other guests, I will have them removed. That's what's happening on Twitter. The new CEO is just taking out the trash.

Another point: bigotry, lies and hate add nothing to any discussion. No bigot has ever had anything interesting or useful to say. What these bigots on Twitter are doing is analogous to taking a shit on the dinner table. They are trash, they are only trying to intimidate people, and they should be kicked out so decent people can get on with our lives.
 
Free speech absolutism, like Musk has proclaimed himself to be, is a bullshit position. It's held only by shallow thinkers or liars.

Consider this: I erect billboards in your home town, showing your photograph and your name, and claiming that you're a child predator. If you're an absolutist you would be totally fine with that because my absolute right to expression weighs more than your right not to have your reputation destroyed.

Are there any absolutists who would stand to that? We know Elon Musk didn't: he suppressed the ElonJet account. He made an excuse, demonstrating that his absolutist position is only absolute to the point that what's being said doesn't offend him personally.

There has never been any human society in which free speech is absolute. It's a total fantasy. We all need to recognise the fact that there ARE limits to expression so we can get on with the sensible debate about what they should be.
