New Republic writer scorches pro-McCain elites who paved way for Trump’s bigotry with GOP’s ‘Southern Strategy’

Jeet Heer, a staff writer for the New Republic, over the weekend took issue with so-called “elites” who have praised Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) stance against President Donald Trump without taking responsibility for helping to create his style of politics.

In a Saturday evening rant on Twitter, Heer said that the eulogies slamming Trump at McCain’s funeral “reflected the weakness of a certain type of politics, Decency Resistance.”

“The overriding message of the funeral was to contrast, by barely disguised subtweets, McCain’s decency & patriotism with Trump’s squalor, selfishness & bigotry,” he wrote. “The problem with the staging of the funeral is that it was designed to draw a contrast between the old establishment (bipartisanly embodied by Bush & Obama) with the off-stage Trump. But that’s false dichotomy. That old establishment created Trump.”

Say what you will, but both parties are guilty of leading us in to the dismal swamp we have in DC right fuck'en now.

“As I’ve been arguing for the last 3 years, Trump wasn’t created out of an immaculate conception but is the true heir to generations of bad politics, notably GOP ‘Southern Strategy’ of race-baiting,” Heer continued. “McCain himself illustrates the true complex dichotomy here: yes, he stood up to Trump & offered an alternative nationalism. But McCain, by picking Palin & also fostering conspiracy theories about ACORN, helped pave the way for Trump.”

Heer went on to posit, “Beyond the Southern Strategy & Palin, think of all the other elite choices that led to Trump: the lies of the Iraq war, the mainstreaming of Islamophobia, the casino economics that led to the 2008 meltdown, Obama’s failure to prosecute bankers.”

“We’ve had decades of elite failure, elite impunity, and elite coddling of racism, elite promotion of anti-intellectualism (think of climate denial). Are we surprised that the end result is President Trump?” Heer asked. “The American elite really thinks they can subtweet their way out of a fascist crisis. It’s not so easy, my friends.”

The Establishment has given us the last 20 years of Winning. Considering the wars and 'conflicts' that we've seen, I'd say they deserve a D- but only that high because they haven't started an atomic war, yet.

Democrats are not perfect, but they abandoned the bigoted "southern strategy" in the 1960s during the height of the civil rights movement, knowing that it would have long-term political impacts.

Obama promised "Hope and Change" but left us Hoping that we would get more than the loose change that trickled down. Trump offered to "Make America Great Again" and yet here we are with mobsters looting our Treasury, or allies pissed off and major/minor trading partners shutting down our trade.

Jack, lately you sound more like a baby throwing a tantrum than an adult assessing realistic options. What we are going through with Trump is primarily due to the trajectory of the Republican party for the past half century. Think about what the "southern strategy" really means and how it has been used. If this trajectory continues, we will have no stability at all in our domestic affairs and foreign relations.

Stop whining. No president can control this very complex world, but Trump is creating unprecedented chaos. Any jackass can gut regulations and create chaos on a daily basis. For those of us who live closer to the land and the means of production, stability looks a whole lot better than chaos.

And if you expect any president to solve all problems, you are acting like Holden Caufield in Catcher in the Rye. If you want a little more control over your destiny, buy some land and eliminate many of the middle-men between you and the resources you need on a daily basis. But for God's sake stop whining.

Mike will try to make America Christian Again and the shit will hit the fan as the House Impeahes him for separation of Church and State and he will be burned in effigy in Lafayette circle.
