Did anybody who's posting on this thread consider that if the U.S. just wimped out and dropped the sanctions that oil would then go for about $10.00 (US) per barrel?

The issue of stability in an oil rich region makes it about the oil.

There are other factors but if there were no oil in that region would we have ever gotten to this point?

I don't mind disagreement. What I mind is thoughtless knee jerk responses based upon a complete lack of information. I have equal issues with some pro or anti Iraq posters in that regard.

The whole blood for oil argument is bullshit because its usually a parroted argument and completely simplistic.

There are a large number of issues involved. The Middle East is very complex politically because of the mistakes made during the Imperial period, the polarization of the cold war period, the economics of oil, the economics of the countries who have significant investments in the region (and in Iraq) and the ethnic and religious issues involved.

I think not.

Probably correct. But that is like saying if there was no Europe or no United States, or no Iraq, would it have gotten to this point. I wonder if it was some other commodity perceived as vital or strategic that was involved.

It's the commodity that even makes us interested in that region.

And it's not the same question. It does refer to history that cannot be changed but perhaps can be learned from.
