Keep in mind the original definition of March Madness, before it was usurped by the sporting world: the phenomenon of hares (and other animals) to go apeshit crazy when their breeding season begins, generally in March. That's why you have the crazy "March Hare" at the famous tea party in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
