starts; the "Run for the Roses" will be his third race in just
over a month; rallied late and finished second in the Lexington
Stakes; was a complete non-factor, finishing eighth in the
Louisiana Derby in March; Sort It Out is by Churchill Downs
graded stakes winner Out of Place, who excelled around two turns
during his racing career and possesses a stamina-based pedigree
being by Cox's Ridge out of a Damascus mare; Baffert has won
three of the last eight Kentucky Derbies, including back-to-back
victories with Silver Charm and Real Quiet in 1997 and 1998.

2. ANDROMEDA'S HERO
-------------------

Trainer: Nick Zito
Odds: 50-1

Never a serious challenger but came on to finish third in the

career starts; a chestnut colt from Fusaichi Pegasus, the
2000 Kentucky Derby winner; one of five horses entered by Zito,
who won the Kentucky Derby with Strike the Gold in 1991 and Go

the Triple Crown by winning the Belmont Stakes.

3. SUN KING
-----------
Jockey: Edgar Prado

fourth in the Blue Grass Stakes on April 16; coasted to a 3
1/4-length victory in the Tampa Bay Derby in March; was third
in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in October; has three wins and
two thirds in seven career races; Sun King is by 1999 Kentucky

the Kentucky Derby three times, the last time with Silver Charm
in 1997.

5. COIN SILVER
--------------
Jockey: Patrick Valenzuela
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Odds: 20-1

With odds of 13-1, Coin Silver won his first graded stakes race

Keeneland on April 23, his second win in five career starts;
broke his maiden in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park on
March 5; has two wins, a second and third in five career starts;

third; will wear blinkers for the first time; is by 2002's

Derby and voted champion colt the same year.

8. GREATER GOOD
---------------
Jockey: John McKee
Trainer: Robert Holthus
Odds: 20-1

After three consecutive victories, never fired and was a distant
fifth in the Arkansas Derby; has been on the board in six of
eight career starts, with five wins and a third; may find the 1
1/4-mile distance to his liking; Greater Good hails from the
first crop of the sprinter Intidab, a winner of seven stakes
races.

9. GREELEY'S GALAXY
-------------------
Jockey: Kent Desormeaux
Trainer: Warren Stute
Odds: 15-1

Was not expected to run in the Kentucky Derby , but that all
changed following a 9 1/2-length victory in the $500,000
Illinois Derby on April 9; the Kentucky Derby will be just his
fourth career start; has won his last three races after
finishing sixth in a maiden allowance race at Santa Anita in
January; owner Wayne B. Hughes paid a $200,000 supplemental fee
because his colt wasn't nominated for the Triple Crown races; a

the 1994 Horse of the Year.

11. HIGH FLY
------------
Jockey: Jerry Bailey
Trainer: Nick Zito
Odds: 8-1

One of the main contenders, High Fly enters the Kentucky Derby

Derby at Gulfstream Park; the Florida Derby on April 2 was his
last start; has five wins and a third in six career starts to go
with earnings of $796,500; is the son of world record-setter
Atticus; Bailey won the Kentucky Derby in 1993 with Sea Hero
and again in 1996 with Grindstone.

12. AFLEET ALEX
---------------
Jockey: Jeremy Rose
Trainer: Tim Ritchey
Odds: 9-2

The early favorite for the Kentucky Derby, Afleet Alex finished
a disappointing sixth in the Rebel Stakes on March 19 due to a
lung infection; rebounded four weeks later to post an
impressive eight-length victory in the Arkansas Derby; finished
second to Wilko in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in October; has
six victories and two seconds in nine career starts; the
last-place finish in the Rebel was the only time he was off the
board in his career; is a son of Northern Afleet, who comes from
the Raise a Native sire line, from which eight of the last 10
Kentucky Derby winners have hailed; this is Ritchey's first
Kentucky Derby starter.

13. SPANISH CHESTNUT
--------------------
Jockey: Joe Bravo
Trainer: Patrick Biancone
Odds: 50-1

Lane's End and Blue Grass Stakes; in the Breeders' Cup undercard
in October at Lone Star Park, was a disappointment after running
second as the 3-5 favorite in the Lone Star Juvenile; has made
eight career starts, with three wins, two seconds and a third;
has heavy European and South African bloodlines.

14. WILKO
---------
Jockey: Corey Nakatani
Trainer: Craig Dollase
Odds: 20-1

Won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile as a 28-1 longshot, although no
Juvenile winner ever has captured the Kentucky Derby; has two
thirds and a fourth-place showing since the Juvenile win;
rallied down the stretch and finished third in the Santa
Anita Derby in his last start; before coming to the United
States, Wilko raced 10 times in England from May 3-September
25, 2004.

15. BANDINI
-----------
Jockey: John Velazquez
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Odds: 6-1

Coming off an impressive six-length victory in the Blue Grass
Stakes at Keeneland; was second to High Fly in the Fountain of
Youth Stakes at Gulfstream in February; did not make his first
career start until late November last year and broke his maiden
in his 3-year-old debut in January; has three wins and a second
in five career starts; also a son of Fusaichi Pegasus.

16. BELLAMY ROAD
----------------
Jockey: Javier Castellano
Trainer: Nick Zito
Odds: 5-2

Has established himself as the favorite with a pair of
dominating performances; won an allowance race at Gulfstream
Park in March by 15 3/4 lengths, then was even more impressive
in capturing the $750,000 Wood Memorial by 17 1/2 lengths at
Aqueduct on April 9; Zito classified his performance in the Wood
as "amazing;" has four firsts and a seventh in five career
starts; is the son of Concerto, who finished ninth in the 1997
Kentucky Derby; Castellano, who won the Breeders' Cup Classic
aboard Ghostzapper, is riding in his first Kentucky Derby;
three Kentucky Derby winners have left from the 16th post.

17. DON'T GET MAD
-----------------
Jockey: Tyle Baze
Trainer: Ron Ellis
Odds: 30-1

A short turnaround after posting a seven-length victory at the
$113,100 Derby Trial on April 30; ran poorly and finished sixth
in the Santa Anita Derby; has taken a liking to Churchill Downs,
winning all three of his starts; those are the only wins in six
career starts for Don't Get Mad, who also has a second and
third in his career; Don't Get Mad is by Stephen Got Even, who
finished 14th in the 1999 Kentucky Derby.

18. CLOSING ARGUMENT
--------------------
Jockey: Cornelio Velasquez
Trainer: Kiaran McLaughlin
Odds: 30-1

Did not threaten but finished a game third in the Blue Grass;
that effort came after he won the Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park
in February; never has been off the board in seven career
starts, with three wins, two seconds and a pair of thirds;
Closing Argument's sire is Successful Appeal; McLaughlin is a
native of Lexington, Kentucky.

19. GOING WILD
--------------
Jockey: Jose Valdivia Jr.
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Odds: 50-1

The only entry for Hall of Famer Lukas, who has won the
Kentucky Derby four times; faded early and was seventh in the
Wood Memorial, marking the only time he has been off the board
in eight career starts; was second in the Santa Catalina at
Santa Anita in March; is a son of the Adena Springs stallion
Golden Missile, who also is the sire of the leading 3-year-old
filly In the Gold.

20. BUZZARD'S BAY
-----------------
Jockey: Mark Guidry
Trainer: Jeff Mullins
Odds: 20-1

Threw himself into the Kentucky Derby mix by winning the
$750,000 Santa Anita Derby by a nose as a 30-1 long shot; was
third in the El Camino Real Derby in March when he reportedly
bled; has three wins, a second and two thirds in eight career
starts; is the son of Florida-based stallion Marco Bay.

digiturf writer Steve Fugitte seems to agree with DLL and me

The 131st Kentucky Derby has attracted a full gate of talented three year olds and we are all set for an exciting rendition of the Spring Classic with a possible superhorse in the works named #16 BELLAMY ROAD. Most experts are predicting odds near 3-1 or 7-2 but I strongly disagree. He'll be 9-5, 2-1 tops and anything above that is stealing on a horse that ran one of the fastest preps in history. I'm talking Mineshaft, Formal Gold and Ghostzapper fast and none of those superstars could produce that kind of figure at three. If he repeats that powerhouse Wood run or even just regresses slightly - it's over. Only knock is that he might go too fast early and thus would have to work too hard for the first mile. The outside draw should help in that regard and give him a speed target in Spanish Chestnut. The price is the key here. My personal belief is that he is worth anything above 2-1. Be prepared to rip up tickets if you bet against him but that may be the only way to make big money. If Bellamy Road is a mere mortal then #12 AFLEET ALEX will probably win the race because he wants it worse than any horse back there. You can see it in his eyes. While not at the level of the top pick, he's plenty fast and will get a nice tactical trip just off the pace under Jeremy Rose, an underrated Mid-Atlantic jockey. He has been pulling double duty in the mornings and therefore should have tons of stamina bottom to help him get the distance, which is a little beyond his pedigree. And then most importantly, he carries the name of an incredibly courageous little girl who raised more than a million dollars for cancer research from a little lemonade stand before succumbing to that disease. Matt Winn seems to give this kind an extra push down the lane. He's running for more than just money - he's running for that little girl and all her hopes and dreams. Good luck and pass the lemonade. #15 BANDINI doesn't have the ludicrous speed figure or heart warming story of the top two - he's just a really nice, well-bred horse who is getting good at exactly the right time. His Blue Grass was a smasher and it was just as fast as Alex's best race. As lightly raced as Bandini is, he is almost certain to run his career top here for Pletcher. The question is how does that effort stack up to Alex and Bellamy Road. Somebody will be odd man out in the betting if Bellamy is 9-5 and if this guy drifts up - I can't blame you for jumping on board. Definitely one to use in exotics. #7 FLOWER ALLEY should be in the 20-1 to 30-1 range and he has a ton of upside. His Lane's End win came very early in his career and the second to Alex in the Arkansas Derby was better than it looked. You hear nothing about this horse but he is a legit contender who can make exotics pay and pay well. #6 HIGH LIMIT will need to work out a trip on or near the lead but has tons of room for improvement in his fifth career start and he's been training like a monster. Throw out #8 GREATER GOOD's last race at Oaklawn. He was too close early and it sapped his late kick. He loves the Churchill oval and should get a much more patient ride from John McKee this time around. Watch him rebound with a top five finish here at odds. He could really juice up the superfecta and has the perfect running style to do it.

"Born in the valley
And raised in the trees
Of Western Kentucky
On wobbly knees
With mama beside you
To help you along,
You'll soon be a'growin' up strong
Oh, the long lazy mornings
In pastures of green,
The sun on your withers,
The wind in your mane
Could never prepare you
For what lies ahead;
The run for the roses so red
And it's run for the roses
As fast as you can
Your fate is delivered,
You moment's at hand
It's the chance of a lifetime
In a lifetime of chance
And it's high time you joined in the dance
It's high time you joined in the dance
From sire to sire,
It's born in the blood
The fire of a mare and
The strength of a stud
It's breeding, and it's training,
And it's something unknown
That drives you and carries you home
And it's run for the roses
As fast as you can
Your fate is delivered
You moment's at hand
It's the chance of a lifetime
In a lifetime of chance
And it's high time you joined in the dance
It's high time you joined in the dance"

Hey, NC, I have a (stupid) question. Just why do jockeys whip the horses?

I know, I know, probably speed..... but it bugs me and I wonder if it is useful.

It's a signal to the horse that they need more speed, It's one of the only ways they have to communicate during a race....It does not hurt the horses

Thank you ~ that makes me feel better.

I'm going to say it will be 'Flower Ally' because I like the name and it's his birthday!
