It's just weird.

Yep.

Lit has gotten really weird lately.

OR maybe it is just me.

However, I think that there is a virus infiltrating the server which is making people act all weird and shit.

(Not just here, but on all the forums I visit.)

It's beyond weird. It's boring. Call me a bitch or an old crone. That's fine. I get tired of being in the middle of reading what started out as a semi-serious discussion and having it hijacked with cyber crap that highlights attention hounds jockeying for position. There's a time and place for it and for some odd reason, people can't seem to figure that out lately.

Hmmm. It's hard to separate the two though.

I find that when topics get TOO serious, people start getting really heated and nasty.

On the other hand, if they get too silly, people lose interest.

On the third hand, it's all about "free speech". I may not agree with what you are saying, but I support your right to say it. So as a reader, we just have to be prepared to wade through the "off-topic" material at times.

I admit, I'm probably the worst offender.

My main point is let's keep most of the flirty cyber stuff in the cafe. That's what this forum was supposedly designed for. We do need a balance between the serious stuff and fun. I don't mind saying that I also hate it when the discussions over on the talk forum become so intense that they're nasty.

Well... I would like to think that the majority of the silliness IS in the cafe. Sometimes it slips out of its bonds and needs to be beaten back into submission again is all. :D

We tolerate bad, rude and disrespectful behavior. We all do.

That's the biggest part of the problem. And that has absolutely nothing to do with "free speech."

I wanna know who let lose all of the trekkies? Eeeek!

That's what I want to know too!

Just because the discussion has died down does not mean you can set up a Trekkie booth right below the ... oh ok, you can have that corner...

But who decides what TOO serious is and why? And isn't it often the case that emotions are raised when serious issues are discussed? Is that reason to not discuss? I think that is why we voted for the division of the board in the first place so serious could continue alongside not so serious without anyone needing to impose one on the other because it was their personal preference. Though not everyone agrees I still think it comes back to respect and interestingly not so serious threads are rarely imposed on by someone wanting to force it to become serious, or suggesting there is too much fun and should be more serious, but the reverse happens almost daily of late.

No-one forces anyone to participate in any thread, nor read them (except for the obligations of librarian and mods) if they don't want to, so why do some feel the need to try and disrupt them because they decide they do not like it or need a place to play and draw attention as Des says. It may not be a conscious attention seeking exercise for everyone but that is how it appears to others. Perhaps the energy might be better used looking at why a person feels so uncomfortable when serious discussion takes place and thrives to the point of having to do their best to hijack it, sometimes repeatedly if first efforts fail.

Um...I hope it's not my fault. I've only been here for a little while, and I love telling jokes and being funny, so I apologize if I'm the cause of people being too silly.
