That's right, it's finally done. The Bookcase that is.

Like I said it's not fancy but it's going to last damn near forever. This afternoon I put the fourth and final coat of Spar Urethane on it. Once that was dry I gave it yet another light sanding with emery cloth and put it together. Now all we have to do is fill it with books which in this household should take us all of ten minutes.

Shows the center piece of what will be on top. This is a train my father had when he was a kid. (The Smurf is my warped sense of humor at work once again.)

That's damn pretty.

I wish I had one like this for the new house, I'd fit perfectly. Good work. :rose:

Thank you. I'm pleased with it.

Now my wife wants me to make a couple more. One three feet wide and four shelves, the other three feet wide with six shelves. (Yes we do have a couple of books.)

Those have to wait for a couple of other projects though. One thing at a time.

My husband makes 'em seven or eight feet high with 10 shelves, just big enough for paperbacks. We have BOOKS! Every time we've ever moved, the movers have always asked us if we've actually read this many books and seemed amazed when the answer is yes-- what do they think we do with them, eat them for dinner?

It does look nice, but are you still being mean and not making one for your less fortunate neighbor?

LOL

I have Crates of books stored in the back bedroom. Most of them are either collections or Reference Books.

Every couple of months my wife and I go through our books and weed out those we don't think we'll read again. We usually fill a box or two and donate them to the hospital.

One day we'll have all of our books in cases.

My brother had a train set when we were younger. We were always hitting smurfs with it :D

Smurfs are good targets.

While I lived at my parents house there was always a Smurf hanging from the upper floor balcony. Too bad it was from a noose.

I guess everybody should have a dream. :)

Half of our books are in boxes in the attic; we used to talk about having enough cases for them all, but I think we've given up. Our downfall is that the libraries around here have sales once a year, where they sell books that have been donated to the library in the past year. Mass market paperbacks are fifty cents; trade paper and hardcover are $1. I live in a suburb of Boston, near Harvard and MIT and Tufts University and a zillion other colleges -- people here READ, so the library sales are crammed full of all kinds of stuff. Every year, my husband and I go to three or four library sales. We come home from each one with twenty or thirty books apiece. That means we acquire 200 books a year just from the library sales, not counting all the ones we buy new.

Getting all of one's books in cases is a never-ending battle!

But then, it's a good problem to have.

The Bookcase looks great, Cat! :D
I, too have lots and lots and lots of books. I have one room in my house that is nothing but bookcases filled with books and there are many more in boxes and bags and even stacked on top of one another, because I have run out of shelf space. Almost every bookcase and shelf has books stacked two deep on them. Hubby and I go through them but I have a very hard time getting rid of any of them. It's almost like I can't bear to think of what might happen to them if they aren't on my shelves.

great job Cat!!

Smurfs aren't so bad. My hubby has some funky troll dolls that he keeps on his desk!!

Looks good Cat. Now when did you say you would have my case ready? Just kidding. I have lost count long ago on the number of book we have here.

Congrats on the bookcases, Cat!

I have around 3,000 books. I've honestly run out of wall to stand the bookcases up against.

My husband's doubles partner and his wife just moved into a house not far away from us. It has 3 rooms BESIDES the master bedroom, the office, and the TV/Game room that's going to be. I think one of them might be an exercise room and one might be for guests, but one of them COULD HAVE BEEN LINED WITH SHELVING AND USED TO HOLD BOOKS. But neither of them are book readers. It's a sad irony, along the lines of the Gift of the Magi.

LOLOL

Like I said my wife has already made comments about a couple more bookcases. She wants me to replace our existing bookcases with my style ones as well as a couple others. If she has her way I'll be making at least three more.

One will be three feet long and four shelves high.

The other two? One will be three feet wide and six feet tall and the other six feet long by six feet high.

Then again I like the looks of this one and am willing to make more. I just have a few other projects to do first.

One is a new set of steps for out front.

Right now we have three wooden steps leading directly to the front door with a railing on one side. What I plan is a platform wide enough for the door to swing out over. This will have four shallow steps leading up to it and will have a railing along the outside.

A Picket Fence along our front flower garden.

An 11x3 foot flower box on one end of the Trailer.

A Lattice sided wooden box for the Propane Tanks and Trash Cans.

If I can get the Permits then I want to replace our 4x6 foot shed with a 12x12 foot shed. (Then I'll have a workshop.)

The Kitchen wall needs repairing. (Near the window.)

The ceiling in the Kitchen and Living Room needs to be replaced.

I want to do an engine rebuild on the Beast.

If I can build a workshop then I have plenty of other projects in mind.

Oh did I mention my wife would like me to make a Captains Bed Frame for our bed?
