Theresa Hines Kerry may have won a few undecided voters yesterday when she told a journalist to shove it.

She just lost them tonight when she began her address to the convention by greeting them fluently in four languages.

Including French.

America won't stand for this.

I'm serious as a heart attack.

Smart Wife Syndrome will be Kerry's achilles heel.

Not only did she speak in foreign tongues, she has a foreign accent. Even worse, she's entirely at-ease as a speaker, she talked about feminist issues, and she doesn't smile when she's saying something serious.

She talked about growing up in South Africa. And learning from Nelson Mandela's imprisonment the importance of always taking a stand, no matter how large the risk.

All over America, the twelve undecided voters are shaking their heads and saying, "Hillary was bad enough, but at least she wasn't from another country."

This is the end.

You didn't see this coming, Sher? ;)

I'm well aware that Teresa is a liability to Kerry for all the same reasons that I have a deep well of respect for her.

You mean she's playing politics? lol
Let's look at it shereads. She spoke four languages. French and Germany are struggling against each other to see who is going to control the EU. Frankly, I'd like to see a first lady who can communicate with the world, not one who says I'm American and speak what I speak.

She got me to smile when she told the reporter to shove it. God knows many would like to tell them that.

I'm just looking at the policies or the different parties. She scored a point on my behalf by addressing the nations of the world in their own languages. She showed an education and international understanding. It's time for America to learn our English is not the only language out there. Hell, my fiance spells color, coloUr!!!!!!! lol

Exactly.

:(

How did his campaign manager allow this to happen?

Seriously, Lord D. I'm glad you admire her. But I'm afraid you've one of maybe two dozen Amerian men who don't fear smart women. See if you can calm the other 100 million and then we'll talk.

No, I really thought the handlers would keep her invisible during the convention. I like her irreverence, but when's the last time you saw irreverence elected to power? Add ovaries to irreverence, and you've got America's Worst Nightmare In a Bra. It's even worse that her husband's the one running for office; guys will think he's "whipped."

Personally I'm waiting for them to elect Tom the smily face on a paper cup to the office of a president. His wife is a 21 year-old supermodel who does what he and his professional handlers tell her to. If the election gets really desperate she'll give a few clandestine blowjobs in the swing states. Tom will have great optimism and he'll even have a little American flag sketched in on the side to show he's patriotic. Plus he has never had any formal education and never sounds haughty or know-it-all.

Oh yes, elect Tom to the White House America, he's one of the "regler" folk.

psst....

and yes, Lord DragonsWing.. I spell the word coloUr CORRECTLY :D

You want me to convince the other 100 million men to vote just for the first lady? lol
I do admire her for speaking at the convention in 4 languages. It shows an appreciation of the world. She won a point with me. But her husband will be president. I'm not sure I agree with his policies though. I'm sorry. But can a future first lady blow the election? I don't think so on this point.

Will Kerry show up and recogonize the world by speaking 4 languages? Will Bush? No way. Neither one wants to upset the public. But perhaps, just perhaps, they should do it and explain beforehand why. Then we're on our first step to joining the world.

But will they? Nahhhhhhhhhhhhh, no need to upset the public. No need to lose votes. Let's continue with a VP who is on the payroll of an oil corporation, let's name another VP who has no foreign policy experience. Let's elect a prez who brought us to war on faulty intelligence, let's look at the other choice who seldom shows up to vote in congress.

I really wish the ladies were running. Then I could make a decision. At least one of them thinks.

Ahem. Foreign policy experience doesn't matter when America elects a governor to the presidency. It didn't matter the last time.

If we staged a pop-quiz on geography and the names of global leaders, for GWB and John Edwards, who do you think would win?

Well to be honest, I think GWB would win. He's got the advisors. There are over 160 countries in the world, who would know them all. It's the policy that counts. Frankly, if Edwards was to replace Kerry as prez, he has no experience. And as for Cheney? Well, he'll go where Halliburton sends him. So we're stuck on who to vote for. The lesser of two evils. This election is going to be interesting. There are many of us undecided. If a first lady speaks 4 languages then she did so because it was recommended. That shows me an international recognition. But she never smiles!!!

Will someone please precipitate a nuclear (nucular) exchange with China and get if over with? America is too stupid to live.

I'm another who isn't afraid of a smart woman. It's too bad T.H. Kerry isn't elgible to run for president in her own right -- I'd vote for her even if I'd rather eat ground glass and wash it down with ydrochloric acid than vote for her husband.

She wouldn't want to run ... she's worth 650 million dollars, what would she risk it for the glorious ignobility of the presidency?

On the other hand....

Disregarding The Shrew, wasn't it great to see ol' Bubba up there orating and stumpin' just like old times? Gotta love Bill. Dude hasn't lost a step. Just like old times.

Took down the fucking house.

P.S. Foreign Policy? And the current president (?) had never left the country before he got elected. Yeah, them foreign policy credentials (dental records supplied by Haliburton) sure are impressive.......

I think ~~~~~NO, NO, NO, you promised yourself you'd stay out of the Political threads!

However, I must take the time to say that not all of America's men are scared by an intelligent woman. Some of us even demand it.

***resisting the urge to brush off the rhetoric****

Well, of course you studly pornsters are not afraid of smart women. I mean other men. Men who lack imagination. Men who know less than a dozen euphenisms for genitalia.

:D

perhaps the issue is that we are stuck on the difference between being a MAN and being male?

I really wish I truly believed your earlier statement about a large portion of the male population being afraid of a strong confident woman in the political arena was untrue.

Unfortunately, I know better...Sigh!

Shereads,

Thanks for this post and I'd like to add something. I always watch American politics from a distance. ( I have access to various international TV news stations, CNN, NBC, SKY NEWS etc) but there is an American correspondent from Washington called Connie Lawn who chats for about 5 or 10 minutes every morning on a talk radio station that I listen in to. She was reporting this morning on Mrs Kerry's speech and her reference to her time spent in South Africa and Mozambique, and how she had abhored apartheid and had learned from Nelson Mandela's imprisonment.

This raised a laugh of disbelief from the radio anchor who asked if Americans ( especially African Americans) really could buy into that? It seems that her time in South Africa was during the fifties/sixties when of course racial discrimination and the formal policy of apartheid was in full force. The Nationalist Government came to power in 1948, I think. But it seems that Theresa Hines was essentially known for being a beauty queen at Wits University ( an exclusive white university at the time) and we all know what a University beauty queen's main focuses are and how important it is to stay popular, don't we? Anyway she left Southern Africa soon afterwards, and the rest, I suppose as they say is history.

I'm not in anyway disputing her intelligence, believe me, nor her ability to be the next First Lady. I'm just giving you a South African reaction to what she said in respect of her time and 'experiences' learned from South Africa.

Thanks, Green. She never said that she was an activist in South Africa, only that she had a perspective on the value of freedom that she would not have had if she hadn't lived there when Mandela was imprisoned. I can't imagine that she's the person she was in her college days. She's raised a family and lost a husband, and has tried to accomplish some things with the money he left her.

Which reminds me of a small irony in all this: several times, I've heard Republicans on talk shows criticizing the way Theresa Kerry's companies operate, with foreign registrations and so on; and implying that her wealth makes her husband's values suspect. Until recently, I didn't know that she inherited the company - and its values - from her first husband, a Republican politician.

She should tell someone to shove it.

Thanks for your post. I try to keep up with what the press in other countries have to say about this election.

Here's a fun fact: the Arabian television news network is devoting more hours of coverage to our conventions than any of the four major U.S. TV networks.

I disagree. I know there will be some to feel this way, but I think there are plenty of intelligent people who would not be put off by a smart first lady, to the point of deciding the election.

I prefer to give the men (and women) of America some credit on this issue.

She refuses to allow herself to be "packaged" and while this will be a liability, I think it will be a positive factor for our future.

If the American people feel intimidated by her intelligence and honest approach to the core values of our country then they deserve the second term of GWB that they would choose.

Maybe not this year but we're seeing the seeds of a potential viable 3rd party in the years to come.

I think she'll be a welcome change to many voters.

I don't fear smart women, I revere them, and I think it would be too cool to have THK as first lady.

It's funny, maybe it's just because I haven't been listening to the 'right' channels, but the only places I've heard fear regarding THK is from people on the left contemplating how some people are going to react to her.

I say if anyone thinks of her that way they were never going to vote for Kerry in the first place. THK can only reinforce the opinions of the people who have all ready decided to vote for JFK, the indepenents who have not yet made up their mind I believe are the ones who won't look to the who's going to be first lady but scrutinize the candidates more, that's why they're still undecided.

I feel that this election has us on the precipice anyhow, our destruction as a race may be inevitable but maybe we can stall things for a while by changing the current administration or maybe even turn things around a bit. If THK does happen to be a factor in Kerry not being elected and Bush is re-elected, we're doomed no matter what caused it. I don't think Kerry is the best person for the job of President, but I do think that he is the best alternative, I just don't know if enough of us see it that way. It's not that Americans are stupid, it's that we are human. Any people from any country put in the same situation as we are would result in a similar form of politics. If the country decides to vote Bush back in, I won't be giving up on America but humanity as a race.
