NOT just isolated blurts - exchanges welcome. This thread is for those moments when you just have to say something political, but it doesn't pertain to any discussions currently underway, and you don't want to start a new thread. The chance is about zero that blurts here will remain isolated rather than instigating contentious but hopefully civil debates. That's cool.

I'll start with a blurt that is completely uncontroversial and that no one will have any reason to challenge  ;) :

Many people believe in manmade global warming because many people believe in manmade global warming. The word "consensus" does not appear in any description of the scientific method.

Politicians are politicians because they like being politicans.

Statesmen are dead politicians.

Definition. Politician...a person who is too lazy to work, and too scared to steal. (until after they are elected)

UK Prime Ministers are supposed to be "first among equals".

That has never worked. No politician ever thinks he/she is equal to anyone. They are all egoists (including me!).

But UK politicians can at least agree that they're more equal than the French!

Every country's politicians think that they are MORE equal than any other country's, and the French politicians know they are more equal because they created equality.

There are two sides to multi-culturalism. On one hand, it has sought to provide a more balanced view of the acheivements and contributions of all the world's cultures and civilizations. But there is a dark side too, which is the ongoing effort to deny or belittle the extraordinary acheivements and contributions of the West. For good and for ill - but mostly for good - for more than a century the West has been the primary source of advancement in material, political, social, and many other realms. The political principles that came out of the Enlightenment are the primary basis of advancements in human rights and human freedom. I am sick and tired of seeing the West demeaned, denied, spat on, demonized, diminished and more, especially by its own "intellectuals," many of whom appear to have developed a chonic case of civilizational self-hatred. That is why I fight back so hard.

The usual pattern with any statement like this is for it to be followed by a litany of real or alleged examples pointing to the "for ill" part of my formulation. What is remarkable is how little thought is given by the detractors to the "for good" side.

"Infotainment" passing itself off as 24-hour news is retarded and bad for democracy.

As soon as a politician says "We must give power back to the people" you know its a lie.

As soon as a politician says "We must consult the people" you know that the decision has already been made and nothing will change it.

No wonder many electors can't be bothered to vote.

I'll carry the theme: :D

"Men work silently in the fields; women weep softly in the kitchen: The legislature's in session, and no person's property is safe."

(Anyone have an authoritative source for that? I always thought it was Dan'l Webster, but I've seen other attributions.)

You got a license for that swarthy complexion, son?

 :D ;)

I'm not even Muslim, but I have Muslim friends. And I'm half-Arab. Heaven help me if they should ever find a Koran on my person. Maybe I should keep my late mother's rosary and take it with me on trips.

This is from the Washington Policy Center:

"It is a time when men work silently in the fields and women weep quietly in the kitchen, for Congress is in session and no man's property is safe." This semi-humorous quote attributed to Will Rogers applies equally to our state legislature

Reasonable - reactionary. Reasonable - reactionary. How do you manage that? (If you think I mean you, then I probably do)

I thought this should go here instead of the joke thread...;)

The Demographics of American Newspapers:

1. The Wall Street Journal is read by the people who run the country.

2. The Washington Post is read by people who think they run the country.

3. The New York Times is read by people who think they should run the country and who are very good at crossword puzzles.

4. USA Today is read by people who think they ought to run the country but don't really understand The New York Times. They do, however, like their statistics shown in pie charts.

5. The Los Angeles Times is read by people who wouldn't mind running the country -- if they could find the time -- and if they didn't have to leave Southern California to do it.

6. The Boston Globe is read by people whose parents used to run the country and did a far superior job of it, thank you very much.

7. The New York Daily News is read by people who aren't too sure who's running the country and don't really care as long as they can get a seat on the train.

8. The New York Post is read by people who don't care who's running the country as long as they do something really scandalous, preferably while intoxicated.

9. The Miami Herald is read by people who are running another country but need the baseball scores.

10. The San Francisco Chronicle is read by people who aren't sure there is a country . . . or that anyone is running it; but if so, they oppose all that they stand for. There are occasional exceptions if the leaders are handicapped minority feminist atheist dwarfs who also happen to be illegal aliens from any other country or galaxy, provided of course, that they are not Republicans.

11. The National Enquirer is read by people trapped in line at the grocery store.

12. The Pensacola News Journal is read by people who have recently caught a fish and need something in which to wrap it.

And this one...

Daddy The Dancer

One day a fourth-grade teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came up -- fireman, mechanic, businessman, salesman, doctor, lawyer, and so forth.

However, little Justin was being uncharacteristically quiet, so when the teacher prodded him about his father, he replied, "My father's an exotic dancer in a gay cabaret and takes off all his clothes in front of other men and they put money in his underwear. Sometimes, if the offer is really good he will go home with some guy and stay with him all night for money."

The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some exercises and then took little Justin aside to ask him, "Is that really true about your father?"

"No," the boy said, "He works for the Democratic National Committee and is helping to get Hillary Clinton to be our next President, but I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids."

One person's reactionary is another person's Burkeian conservative.

(That's what our Colly was, by the way, although she didn't realize it, or adhere to labels.)

The real reactionaries today are those who will fight to the death to defend their sinecures in dysfunctional government institutions, like teachers unions fighting agains school choice provisions, or some of those who fight agaist private accounts for Social Security.

Shut the fuck up about family values and the gays... I don't give a shit.

So as not to generate any strife or stress for anyone on this Holiday, I'm taking the day off from posting on a couple of contentious political threads now underway. But I'll be baa-ack . . .

Happy Easter, AH. :rose:

An interest in politics is necessary to keep the corruption to a minimum and maintain sanity in the face of all the decisions that affect the policy that affects interference in your life.

An interest in BEING a politician, is indicative of mental illness.
