I remember my first solo. An old Stearman bi-plane my grandfather used to dust cotton with. Just me, the wind, 6000 pounds of DDT. soaring a foot over the top of the cotton plants, pass after pass, after pass.

Luckily it was an easy field. Only one power line and two cottonwood trees to avoid.

Young and dumb. How did I ever live to be this old?

Crap. I forgot to bring a clean uniform for kung fu class tonight.

Crap. My legs feel sore from working out last night.

Crap. I'm going to be tired and stinky at class tonight :(

LOL I know the feeling mate, how come we made it this far LOL

That Jodel I learned in was all canvas as well, home build with a variant of the VW campervan engine for power. I learned at a military airfield and had to put up with loads of rules and a tarmac runway, it all had to be precise or I'd have falied. The guy I shared ownership of the kite with was in the RAF.

Your experience sounds much more fun way to do it:D

Good lord...you did crop dusting on your first solo? That's just nuts! Banking hard and dropping low were you? I salute you pilots...pop...

Guess I should honor your ability to survive your younger years by making the morning coffee tomorrow. :)

First solo just meant there wasn't anyone else aboard but me. I had been flying that plane and dusting for almost a year already but always had my uncle or grandfather with me. One morning my uncle was late and the winds were supposed to pick up early so I left without him. :D

Crop dusting is a lot like doing touch and go landings 400 times a day. Only the runway is the top of the corn or cotton stalks. Power lines and trees just add interest.

The song "Candida" by Tony Orlando and Dawn is playing on Sirius Satellite Super sounds of the 70's. Never fails to crack me up.:D
