Is Sirius/XM trying to deliberately kill off the metal programming? First they replace the XM DJs with the inferior Sirius posers, and now they are canceling regular programming for a month to replace it with all Metallica programming? What the fuck? I don't pay so that my only musical outlet can be overrun by a band that I don't even like for an entire fucking month. Anyone that has any say in any of this needs to be fired, and thrown into a mud pit, and eaten by snakes.

This morning I went to a talk by a local radio presenter.

Apart from the fun, he had a couple of serious points to make about his programme controllers.

He presents a Saturday morning radio show from 6am to 10am. Most of his callers to that phone in programme are people of a certain age who were around in the 1960s. Why not? The youngsters were out clubbing on Friday night and aren't up at 6am on Saturday morning.

The programme controllers wanted him to change the style of music to "cutting-edge" pop produced in the last couple of years. He protested. They insisted.

His listening figures dropped by 40%. The calls of complaint increased by 300%. The letters-bag bulged with moaning pensioners. The radio stations server nearly crashed with the volume of irate emails.

Did the programme controllers admit that they were wrong? No. They just insisted that he give airtime to the "cutting edge" pop between 8am and 10am.

The listeners organised a "flash-mob" demonstration outside the radio station's offices on a Saturday morning, blocking traffic for blocks around. The programme controllers weren't there. They work 9-5 Monday to Friday.

The Police advised them (on Monday morning) that if such a demonstration happened again there would be a large bill for Police manhours.

The "cutting-edge" pop was moved to Friday evening 9pm to 12pm. Now a different group of listeners are protesting because those who want "cutting-edge" pop are out clubbing on Friday evenings between 9pm and 12pm. Those who want to hear it - can't. Those who don't want to hear it have had their preferences ignored.

The majority of the programme controllers are recent media studies graduates. The radio presenters are aged comics who grew up in front of live audiences. Which group knows what the listeners want? Which group listens to what the listeners say?

I am trying Last FM right now. If this works out, and I will just cancel my satellite subscription. Too bad I can't get Last FM in my car though. I will have to live off of CDs exclusively there.

OMG. I have never written so much in such a short amount of time. The deadlines get narrower and narrower and my brain is going: "Hey, hey. Slow down a second!" Ah well, I made the quota for today. Whew.

Whoever labled some of these LastFM tracks Metal is as clueless as the DJs from Sirius Satellite's Hard Attack channel. Doesn't matter. They are all banned from playback for me again.
