Dear Grace (and and Jag, Starkers, Holly, X, etc.):
Check out this (it's the OP in the "too many political threads" thread). It's an apology and an explanation that, although those who aren't "into" this sort of thing have to take it on faith, the polical debate and discourse that occurs on AH is really of a very high order, in a way that does us proud. Really. It may seem like caterwauling, but it's not, which would become obvious if you were to peek at what passes for political discourse almost anywhere else on the internet (I don't recommend it).
Bottom line is the apology: Our political debating is a form of pollution on the rest of this community, which is why I called that thread "too many political threads." The least we could do is restrict ourselves to ghetto that occupies less real estate.![]()
-quirks an eyebrow- Roxanne, I really don't wish to start an arguement here, but I'll just make a couple of quick statements:
1) Most people who are responding are tired of the deluge of threads of political natures placed upon the boards. There is an excess of them, and it grows very tiring to have to search through the boards for a non-political thread.
2) A lot of people are tired of the same people taking innocent threads and slanting them to a political nature. This is childish.
3) You state that you are debating. Of the threads I've seen, mostly I've seen name calling and personal beliefs. Debates require restraint from name calling as such, and facts. Stating beliefs as facts does not count. Example: "Your 401K suffers because the oil companies are making billions." For one, if you have a halfway decent fund manager, then your fund has money in oil futures and oil companies, and for two, the economy sagging is not just the fault of oil companies. This is a result of poor research and understanding.
4) The lack of taking responsibility for your statements. A lot of people come in here, blow off their own beliefs and then cry when people are offended. If you make a political/religious/or otherwise similiar topic statement, prepare to have offended people. Even if you claim its all in humor, topics of that nature are often easy to offend others with. Grow up and accept the consequences.
I know myself, and a quite a few are just tired of this. You claim its bad other places on the internet? I agree, and yet there are other places where this is better suited. Not in an environment that people come to in order to escape their everyday lives, where they are bombarded both online and in news by the constant coverage, not including "Obama wore a grey t-shirt and blue shorts to the gym" Only to come in here and be consistently bombarded by the same material.
We only ask that the small group of people doing this, show some self restraint, leave threads that aren't political as non-political, and stop covering the boards to cover every little topic. If there is already a thread similiar, post there, that would cut out about 1/3 of the threads being created. I know this can be done, just look at the Olympics Politics thread, people were restrained enough to post only in there and not over the threads which were dedicated to the enjoyment of the games.
Thank you in advance.
