You are correct, NJ.

Trews (Gaelic Truis or older Truibhs) are men's clothing for the legs and lower abdomen, a traditional form of Scottish apparel. Trews could be trimmed with leather, probably buckskin, especially on the inner leg to prevent wear from riding on horseback.

Trews may be origin of the word trousers.

Considering the traditional means of wearing kilts, I think I'd be looking for trews as well. lol...

Yeah....the verbage for that apparel (can't spell tonight, please forgive me) has changed over the years.

Trews - trousers
Breeches (britches)
Pantaloons (pants)

Definitely had an effect on modern English, no?

I actually love wearing a kilt, traditional style. ;)
They're incredibly comfortable and warmer than you might think.

It's amazing how much influence the english language picks up from almost everywhere. It's a very parasitic language.

It's really interesting to think about that - I never realized that there were so many words, but then again, it's not my language. That's why I ask so many stupid questions.

I think I feel most comfortable with Breeches, maybe because I'm sure I've seen it in fantasy lit before.

I just wouldn't want to ride horseback if I was a male and wearing it traditionally. Good way to chafe the goods, I'd think. lol

I'm more used to seeing "breeches' used in romance - especially historical novels.

lol I found it a bit more comfortable to stand in the stirrups at least at a trot. Of course that was years ago.

That's one of the things I have enjoyed during my studies (English major, hoping to go back soon). You see the progression of Old, Middle, King James..all the way to Modern English and the adaptation of words as the language grows. It's fascinating!

I guess that's true although the highlanders traditionally didn't have a lot of horses. Maybe that's why they invented trews. :D

If I had to guess, I'd say it's possible that the Vikings may have introduced at least one version of the trews to the mix. If I remember my histories right, I believe the Celts wore kilts as well. As far as Picts, I'll have to research again.

I did a paper on the kilt traditions back in high school - LONG time ago.

Relatively speaking, I don't think it could have been that long ago ;)

*sighs* People keep asking what I want for xmas, one who says one big thing, I dont know..seriously I never do! I'm wracking my brain and nothing. I found a few things to give to the hubby on my list and that was pushing it to the limits of my want list.

My mom asked me one year and I seriously told her a can of hairspray. I didn't need or want anything. I got pants. lol . . . had to buy my own hairspray. ;)

This year I've picked out a few things. New charms for a charm necklace I have and a new wool dress coat, because my favorite one is now too large for me. It was a 4X and I'm a 1X right now, so it swallows me up. I've also marked two Longaberger baskets that I like and seriously told him that if he doesn't plan on ordering them by Dec. 11th then I will be on the 12th since that is the last day to order the two I want. LOL

I'm asking for donations to the "new laptop for EL" fund for Christmas this year.

Poor prescilal is on her last legs and I need a new'un but their expensive and the more money I can get towards a new prescilla the better :)

Is'nt it great getting swallowed up by your old clothing? :) I recently got rid of a bunch of my larger clothes, not ever going back there!
