okay... so, they basically are saying "We'll take a chance on you. We recognize that you are more interested in security and in being on a team than you are in being an independent agent. But you have other qualities that we like, so we are willing to risk 6-8 months of paying you on the chance that you can get past the roadblocks. If you fail, we'll write it off and move on."

and I'm saying, "I know they're making a bad decision. That's not where I'm going long term and I know it. I will fail because my heart is not in sales. But... they're offering me a way to defer the decision and survive for 6-8 months."

Can it actually be a positive to turn down a good job with a good firm? Or do I accept it, knowing I'll be sorry later but wanting the temporary relief from being unemployed?

don't ask me, but you can come and sit in my 'existentially confuddled about careers and jobs' corner with me. We hug our knees and rock back and forwards while weeping hysterical tears over bank statements and comfort eating cake.

^5 Bel. been there and done that. Sales is what you make of it. it can be liberating...more control of your time and your income. Not to mention it brings you in contact with lots of people which can lead to other opportunities.

The old adage was, "It is easier to find a job when you have one." Not sure if that is still true or not, but I still am inclined to think that way. The question is, what doors does this job open? Sales jobs are often good places to make contacts with potential employers. I personally would look hard at it if unemployed, unless the job cuts into some other facet that has not been discussed.

Thank you very much.
you're welcome, darlin. I'm sincere in my offer as well. I promise to listen, not judge, and to keep my hands off your backside.
