It was a favourite movie of mine as a child; I hear that the book is better (and the author was displeased with the movie), but haven't had a chance to read it.

So I hear. I know the movie cuts off about half-way through the book, too, and that the second movie, while it does use elements from the second half, strays completely from the book. I would imagine that the actual point and theme of the story comes out much better in the book than the movie.
