The whole baby shower (or the bridal one either) thing completely throws me. Why? What for? Over here, once people know you're pregnant, if they want to, they bring you a gift, when they next see you. In most cases, the gift - usually clothes or baby toys, or a supply of nappies (diapers), is given to the parents AFTER the baby's birth. Any gifts of a more permanent nature are usually given to the parents at the baby's baptism - if they have one.

I dont know why either, but not long ago, when my mom was having kids, you did the shower before baby came, now they do it after.

I guess doing it after, you know what colours to get, and what they actually need.

I agree with the Christening deal, thats what I had, I don't have any sisters and only had one sister in law at the time of my man-childs birth and they were going through a divorce, so I held a big christening party. Had the Christening at our church and rented the church hall for a tea reception. Did the same with Cat.
I felt rather put back that NONE I mean NONE of my friends gave me a shower for my kids. My mom knew this and one of her friends had a tiny shower for me, her girls, my mom and grandma and my godmother.
I didnt want my sister in law who doesnt have any sisters to feel the same way, thats why Im co-ordinating one for her.

I think alot has to do with the fact that you dont have alot of money when you have kids near to when you get married, thats why they do the showers.
