How do you guys have spare monitors??? They're not exactly like spare change!

I'm a geek darling. I have spare monitors, spare cards, spare hard drives. Just teh junk laying around my office could build a decent system in under 4 hours.

Well...

I have three computers and a laptop, each computer came with a monitor but I only use one monitor with a KVM switch. So..there are two extra monitors floating around. Actually three now, my son just bought a new monitor for his computer and dropped off his old one here.

I also have several key boards and mice laying around.

My boss gives me all the old computer equipment everytime he changes things out....

I found a use for the stuff.. build up a system... take it to the local jr highschool and give it to the principle... it's to be given to the student who has the best attendence and best grades for the next 6 weeks... free..

Only thing is, if mama and daddy buy you a new system bring it back to school so I can redo it for the next kid...

I've got about 25 computer systems floating around.... I've made about 35 kids very happy.... not sure about the parants though... :D

That's really, really cool, TX. You're good people.

So a serious monitor question to the geeks then: if your monitor has random blinking moments for no particular reason, is that a definite sign of impending doom? Or am I worrying for nothing? (she asks hopefully)

Well, it's definitely a sign that something's coming. What you really have to look out for is when the monitor starts getting what I call "the shakes," and the screen image starts hopping up and down like you're trying to watch a scrambled porno on Pay-Per-View.

It could be ither a bad power cord (not bad, easy to replace) or impending doom.

Most power cords are universal so try one from an old monitor or computer and see if you still get flickers. if not, you fixed it. If so... impending doom.

Sorry :(

Try kicking it.

I don't have a spare cord, so I'll have to wait to test that theory. The progression of the flicker was that first it only did it after the monitor came back from being asleep (it would flicker off and on for a few minutes, act like it was going off completely), so I stopped putting it to sleep and just leave it on a screensaver. Then it started doing it after I turned it on initially. Now it just does it whenever it feels like it. Which is why I'm leaning toward impending doom. I just want it to wait till late August when I have money to replace it and/or buy a laptop.

I have a box full of spare parts ... and I'm almost certain a power cord is in there somewhere. Lemme know if you want me to send.

Wow. That's the last time I'll try to give tech advice. I should just stick to travel stuff instead.

That'd be really great; I could always send it back if it turns out to be the monitor and not the cord.
