Don't know about your state, but here it really doesn't matter which partner files. The judge has a child support formula with minimum amounts. The parent with custody is getting that -- even if s/he is the parent who filed.

I've looked at it from every angle possible already. There's barely enough money now to make ends meet. I live in a jerkwater cowtown, so even if I found it a job, it wouldn't be enough to make up the difference between what more I'd need for me and the kids and what I'd need for childcare.

Childcare is the reason I'm not working now. I doubt a job is going to work around their school holiday schedule and it would take more than what I could make to put them in childcare in the summertime.

... and that tells me you're not as serious about it as you think.

i quit working because of the cost of child care. There is NO town here - the nearest one is 15 miles away. If i'm lucky enough to find ANY job, they won't work around schedules, either.

But...

There are other places close enough to share custody, with job markets that are more open. Child support is designed to help with things like the cost of child care. Some jobs will allow a person to come in just after school starts in the morning, and leave just before school ends. Others let a person come in after school starts and allows children to be bussed to the business for those last couple of hours of working. You can work custody to your advantage. Make him take the kids during at least every other school holiday break. That way it won't be as stressful for you.

It took a long time for me to realize all of this, and a kick in the ass wakeup call from vampy, but it worked.
