My favourite American
Next month my favourite American is in London on a brief visit before travelling to Normandy.
On D-Day he was a tank commander for the landings at Omaha Beach. His tank and crew sank under him. Alone, he got ashore, picked up a discarded rifle and became an infantryman for the rest of the day. Later, with another tank and another crew, he fought his way from Normandy to Germany's surrender.
He is going back to Normandy, possibly for the last time, to visit the memorials for his first crew that he has never forgotten.
He is a modest man who has rarely spoken about WWII, even to his family. Now he is a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
I want to shake his hand and say "thank you" again.
