Depending the direction I travel, in two hours I don't even get out of my own shire. And no, my car isn't that slow.

In two hours from my place to my mum and dads' I cross about four counties I think <mutters to self> Surrey, Middlesex, Oxfordshire, possibly Gloucestershire, Warwickshire. Yup. At least four.

Chuckles.

I remember chatting many years ago with a tourist from Germany.

When I mentioned 'going to the cottage', a phenomena that consists of driving at least two hundred miles every weekend during the spring, summer and fall, her jaw dropped. Traveling two hundred miles in Germany meant you could easily cross several international borders.

Here's the trip my family used to take when we 'went to the cottage'

I remember when in Australia my parents were expecting a friend for dinner.

He phoned to say that he might be late. We were in Melbourne. He was in Mildura and had been delayed by a meeting overrunning. He arrived twenty minutes late.

His car was a Ferrari SuperAmerica and he had averaged 89 miles an hour mainly on dirt-surfaced roads.

Some of our friends would drive from Sydney to Melbourne to attend an Aussie-Rules match.

When we returned to the UK, my friends were horrified that I was working in Portsmouth "It's miles away!". By train I could go to London for an evening show.

When I was commuting 70 miles each way by train some of my colleagues thought that I was mad. Even when I changed jobs and drove 32 miles each way my new colleagues thought the distance "impossible".

It's a question of perspective.

Indeed. My Dutch in-laws can't comprehend that I drive 11-12 hours one way when I visit my parents. They ask me why I don't fly. Flying to that remote area of Wyoming is not financially feasible; driving is cheaper. Eleven to twelve hours of driving for them would likley put them in the Czech Republic, possibly even Poland.

its not that long of a drive here.

just sayin.

On a nice day I could reach Canada in 11 hours. When it's snowing it can take that long just to get home from work, or about 9 miles.

Not to get political, but McK's post sheds light on an important difference between big chunks of the US from Europe and even the east cost. I visit DC and see all these little bitty cars parked on the narrow streets (or Rome a few decades ago when 2/3 of cars were Fiat 500s) and think they make perfect sense in that evironment, but the further in from the coasts you move the better larger more capable vehicles look. (I still think most of those big honkin' SUVs are dumb, but something the size of a Sant Fe makes perfect sense in the interior.)

everything here shuts down at the slightest hint of ice. and then you still have asswipes out there trying to see how big and strong they look, sliding backwards in their honkin huge supped up trucks.

its kinda entertaining.

I saw a bumper sticker the other day that made me laugh out loud: Draft SUV driver's first!

:D

Possibly Portugal, judging by some of the Dutch drivers I've seen here

My one uncle by marriage is from Italy. His cousins came over to stay with him for a while, and they wanted to backpack across the country, thinking in terms of backpacking across Europe where you can hit several countries really quick. I forget exactly how far they thought they could get in how much time, but it was roughly equivalent to walking acros New York State.

And if I were to drive for two hours, depending on which direction I drove, I would either be in New York, Pennsylvania, still in New Jersey, or in the Atlantic Ocean...

I don't know how far away Canada is, but it would be a while. Maybe 8 to 12 hours?

time to shower...shave....start another day of FUN:D
anyone care to join me?

I love Cerise's corset (and her collarbone, it's beautiful - very fragile) and heartily embrace nostalgia for Europe. I fully encourage you to relocate <big grins>

I want to go over to Paris. Just briefly. Just for shits and giggles. I love the idea of hitting a whole different country just for a day or something.

You are such a lovely friend, you know:heart: And depending how things turn out, who knows, I just may end up back. Honestly, some days it seems to longer I'm here, the more foreign I feel.

And if we're lucky, maybe we'll get to meet in Paris for lunch this summer.;)

Hmmm....

For lunch I could have a very nice grilled chicken with greens, perhaps some scaloped potatoes in a light creme sauce and a nice pino grigio.

Or I could have mac-n-cheeze, frozen chicken nuggets and fruit punch.

Decisions, decisions...
