Is this information public knowledge?

I felt a little stupid last night. Got my haircut and was talking to a friend about stuff later on and she asked if I tipped the stylist. I didn't know that was done or expected. What other information am I missing? What things didn't you know about that after you found out you felt, "well duh!?"

The federal minimum wage laws allow employers to pay a wage below the minimum for "tipped" employees. A certain amount of tips received needs to be reached before the employer can depress the wages. It's in the employer's best interest to encourage customers to tip his employees.
Generally speaking, I don't tip anyone unless I'm reasonably sure that they are earning less than minimum wage and surviving on tips. I don't believe stylists are in this category.

Haven't you ever wondered why you've been walking around with disasterous haircuts?

Three groups you always tip: waiters/resses, cab drivers and hair dressers...

:D

And here I thought it was hereditary.

here in Quebec you add to that list the guy at the gas station (pump guy?) and the guy who put the grocery in your car.

:)

I've been told to tip the mailman too but I ignore that one. He always gives me somebody elses mail.....and it's never anything good....porn, money...etc.

call me a cheapskate, tightwad or whatever, but WHY must I tip someone that makes a wage equal to or higher than the Federally mandated minimum? How does me tipping ensure proper service? I mean whats my barber going to do, miscut my hair next time? That happens and he looses a client, plus anyone I can keep from going back to him. Vallet Parking, ha, they damage my auto, their insurance company fixes it. Bag Boys, pass, can push my own cart to the car. Cabbies, if I am in a huge hurry and they can get me to my prescribed place in the time allotment I give them, then yes then they deserve a tip, for Proper Service, which is going above and beyond the expected. But to take me across town from a club to a resturant, hmmm, that is what they do for a living, drive people, whats above and beyond about that. Paper Carrier, hmmm, put the damn thing in my driveway like I request and I might just pay on time but a tip, why?? BellHops, ok, will admit, they are preforming a physical labor for me, so I think they may just deserve one, IF they do not act like the expect one.

Servers, I tip them like crazy IF they go above and beyond. Simply refilling my tea or removing my plate is not above and beyond. Suggestive selling, anticipating my needs are and that gets highly rewarded.

Am I off base or just a cheap bastard.....

I've just remembered another group. The binmen...

But that's only at Christmas and it's more like demanding money with menacing behaviour...

But everyone goes along with the charade and calls it a tip.

:D

Always tip the people in charge of your image: Girlfriend, barber, butler, valet, etc...

In France you tip the firemen. Not only do they do the life-saving job and get rid of wasps nests, and take you to hospital, they are also your neighbour - unpaid experts, like lifeboat men were in England - They may still be for all I know.
They do a lot but not haircuts.
Think of all the money John the Baptisit saved.

What do you do?

Hang around burning buildings with pockets full of loose change?

:D

I'm not used to tipping from back home, so here in UK I keep forgetting to at times. I tip the cab drivers if they help me carry lots of luggage, and I tip in nicer restaurants. If I'm with a group of friends in a restaurant or something else, then I tip because they remind me too. Mostly I just don't do it when alone because I'm a student and use that as my excuse. I need my money to pay for other things!

Oh, and I never pay my hairdresser. I've read that you're apparently 'supposed' to if you really like the haircut. I guess I haven't been impressed enough over here then...

Sounds like we go to the same one...

Oh, you also go to the drop-in one in China Town? ;) The one where it takes you an hour to try and explain you do not want them to thin the hair out, nor cut it more than an inch, but then they do it anyway...

Hey, at least you're a man. It won't cost you £22-25 per haircut.

I dont tip the hairstylist unless its a really good cut.

Screw up my hair and I am supposed to pay extra to you for it?

Nope not at all. I just didn't even realize that a tip was expected or accepted. I'm 34 years old and one has ever mentioned it before. We need a manual I think.

I did pay my scholarship by working in bars and restaurants and this is really hard work!!!!

I've learned that cheap people are form everywhere. When we did get group of traveling people from USA we did knows that the tips would be bad (dont want to make any ennemy here lol).

The less you gives here (restaurant) is 15% of the total bill, wine and beer included...

:)

Tipping

It is always a safe bet to offer a gratuity to an individual that provides personal service. Especially, as was mentioned, individuals that perform "image related" services, from hairdressers to shoe shiners.

The Dear Abby's of the world have continuously printed articles with more specific guidelines.

It can if you don't stick to your own man and most definitely will in the West End.

A hairdresser or barber takes time to train, at least two to three visits.

After that it's all plain sailing.

Haircuts good, conversation entertaining and tip is willingly given.

It becomes a partnership between him and your hair...

:)

Ok, when it comes to tipping I'm more of the why not thought than the why.
Granted, not tipping probably won't make your barber fuck up your do, or your vallet crunch your wheels, but it will make them happier to serve you and more willing to go the extra mile for you.

Oh, and vallets who don't get tips have been known to pee in your car next time you show up. People are fucked, don't give them an excuse to fuck you.

At home I have a hairdresser that took about £25-30 for my hair, but she was darn good! I liked her a lot and if it had been the custom in Sweden, I would certainly have tipped her. Here I never make an appointment, I'm an impulsive need-a-change-customer. :D I walk in, I end up with whoever within 10-15mins, and it's over within an hour. Fits me perfectly.

Now, if I had someone I went to regularly I'd probably tip the person the first few times if I really liked the haircuts. But, in the long run I probably wouldn't, as I find that me becoming a regular customer is a bigger compliment.

At times I get a bad consience when I later realise I didn't tip someone, and I feel bad, but it's not about being cheap, it's just that I'm from a country where you just don't tip! You only tip in really nice restaurants. I guess because the pay is pretty good as it is. Nobody will expect you to tip, and they won't get upset if you don't. I think it's different in other countries, like UK and US. The minimum wage is so low, so you live on the tip. I always tip when in the US, just seem to remember it easier when I'm visitng a country, but after living in the UK, I tend to forget at times.

Someone said to tip the girlfriend

Most women I know would not take kindly to that.

I just learned the other day that you're supposed to tip the Sonic waiters and waitresses!! Part of me felt like a heel... the other part of me said, "It's a fast food joint, for cryin' out loud!"

(For those of you who aren't blessed with a Sonic nearby...it's a drive-in burger joint kinda modeled after the 50's... some of the food runners even come out on roller skates. :D)

As for hairdressers? The one I went to in FL did an awesome job every time.. And I KNOW that her cut of my $15 was not what she deserved for that amazing job...so I always left her $2-5 (depending on what I had on me).

Edited to add: bluesboy... It's *Marxist*... we don't pay attention to him when he says things like that... ;)

Thanks Rose

I still dont know the ins and outs yet.But I didnt want to lose one of our posters to a justifiably raging woman.
On the other hand, if we did lose all the guys then I would be the center of much needed adoration. *The plotting begins...*
