Is this BDSM?

I am about to submit my second story to the site. It is for the Winter Themed Story Competition. Rather like my first story it is about power exchange. But there are no overt references to D/s. I wanted to write a story showing shifting dynamics and an alpha man submitting to a woman. In the first scene the woman tops the guy. She uses honour bondage which is described and shown but never named and the couple don’t sit down to negotiate this before hand. In a later scene the man tops the woman.

So my question is would you see such a subtle power exchange story sitting in the BDSM category or better placed in the Erotic Couplings category with tags saying power exchange?

I have to get so many votes for the story to be entered and I’ve been told the BDSM category has a lower readership than Erotic Couplings meaning I might not get enough votes if I post the Shifting Dynamics Christmas story in BDSM.

What are the thoughts of others on here?

No one can say for certain, but the general opinion I've come to use is that the BDSM readers expect more than what you described. many of them also expect the writing to reflect reality and accuracy in regard to BDSM practices. An alternative would be Erotic Couplings, coupled with good story tags that include the BDSM apsects you want to emphasize. e.g male submission, female domination, etc.

I have two published stories -- one in the BDSM section, another one in the Erotic Coupling. The second one has a note "This story has a strong BDSM feel, but in a "sensual femdom" style. Which means that the female character does take control, but there are no chains, no whips, and no pain either."
This was enough to avoid the outcry.

As for the readership... The one in the BDSM section has about twice as many views as the one in the Erotic Couplings. I don't know if this is specific to these two stories or not, but it does not look like Erotic Couplings always get more views.

I say BDSM. BDSM readers aren't looking for a particular quantity or type of dominance-submission activity, or infliction of pain, or kinky bondage toys. The key is that the erotic emphasis of the story is on D/s activity of some kind. You must anticipate that readers will be looking for this and will expect it, and if you want happy readers in that category your story must provide that. It sounds like your story fits this bill, although I don't have enough details to know for certain.

I would say you should put it in whatever type Story you think it best applies to. You seem to grasp the subject well and it is Your story. You can always include a note or something that refers to the items you describe.

My understanding of D/s is it is a story about power exchange specifically revolving around male submission - to a point.
SimonDoom your feedback on here and authors hangout has really helped. I’ll put in a few more overt references and probably post under BDSM. If it’s hated or I don’t get enough votes to enter the comp so be it.

BDSM is about power exchanges. A big part of that power exchange comes from is exploring and consistently learning about yourself and what you like and what you do not. I can't see why it wouldn't be a BDSM story.

Thank you. I’ve just watched the story score slowly bombing this evening. It might not suit everyone but it’s not that bad. May be the inability to do anything and the grey is why. I’m gutted as I thought it was a decent little story

I think this is beautiful. The two people dance to the natural rhythm without rigid rules of D/s relationship or the concept of what an alpha male is supposed to be. They don't need labels or a ' negotiation' and yet understand intuitively. That's what's ultimately fulfilling in a relationship isn't it ?

Thank you, that means a lot. I hoped it read as organic with realism and the obvious prior connection, meaning they could just enjoy each other in a playful way

Just a quick thank you any one who read and rated my little story. It wasn’t placed but it’s doing quite well in the BDSM category now. Sadly it was troll votes while the competition was running, meaning it looked to have a low score. Admin removed the troll votes and it became a hot listed story but after the judging had finished. So again a massive thank you to those that ignored the temporary low score and gave it a chance.
