I received this weird e-mail to my Literotica e-mail address (in fact, it was sent twice). The "Irretrievable" stuff is truly strange. Of course I didn't open the attachment, and deleted both files immediately. Anyone else get this? Just curious.

my college sent out a warning about a virus that comes in a similar form, so i would be careful...

"We have been notified by McAfee of a new high risk virus called W32/SirCam@MM (Sir Cam Virus). This virus comes in the form of an email with the following text:

Hi! How are you?

I send you this file in order to have your advice
or I hope you can help me with this file that I send
or I hope you like the file that I send you
or This is the file with the information that you ask for

The e-mail will have a random subject line and 2 random named attachments. If you receive this email please do not open the attachments and delete the original message."

I am getting approximately 7 of these a day since last week. I do not open them, just trash them and then empty the trash...so far there are only two names which keep sending these to me. The files/emails are quite large (around 211 K), so I look to see what the size of the files are before I open any mail.

Yeah, these two were both around 233K.

My family and friends get upset with me when I tell them to stop sending me those funny joke e-mails that seem to make their way around the web every freakin' day. But this is just how these virus' are sent, by reading someone's address book and sending itself out. I never open attachments anymore.

And thank God for Macintosh.

the virus is called SirCam

and you can read about it here: http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/internet/07/20/computer.viruses/index.html

Good call, not opening the attachments. Someone else did, and your mail is the result...

"Once a computer is infected, Sircam creates a list of files with extensions such as .DOC and .JPG that are located in the user's "My Documents" folder. The virus then sends copies of itself to users in the victim's address book, including one of those files chosen at random."

What does this virus act on though, once it is in your CPU?

I havn't recieved anything like this, but ever since about two and a half weeks ago, my cpu has been freaking out, doing insane shit.

We have errors up the ass, but what's worse is that it will blue screen error on us, and then start flipping out, flashing, scrolling a bit, and getting all crazy, freezing up, and even going to a black error screen. We defragment. Our RAM is above 65 and we are fine elsewhere. I had downloaded SETI@home, but after disabling it, we are still having this happen.

Even stranger, just now, as I have been typing, I got a Zone alarm notice saying "Would you like to allow MSN messenger to access the internet.." when I don't have MSN messenger on my computer anymore, and I did away with it, when we had to do a systems restore do to .dll errors, 2 months ago. My husband just said that he didn't do it, and something is really fucked up. This all may be irrelevant to this thread, but I am worried that something is at hand.

I've done McAffee virus scans to find out I have no virus.
:(

WTF???

Sorry Dixon, I don't mean to take over your thread. I am just a bit freaked out by all of this.

If they're designed to write over files or create new files that gum things up but aren't recognized viruses... *shakes head* I've gotten alot, but I assumed they were editing things.

Laurel!!! We're being stalked halp!!!!!

I'm going to go to home.com where mine originated and bitch.

thanks KM, I am a bit worried that I have a virus but not this one. If it isn't a virus, I have a possesed computer.

SHIT!!!

Yuck G. Maybe you should save all necessary files to disk and format your hard drive. Or write Seti. Sounds like they fucked up your puter.

DCL

Yes I received 2 of these emails but knew better than to open the files.

I do believe they were directed at people from lit.

They were, but it was not a conscious targeting of Literotica. The virus targets those in the address book of infected computers. Somone with numerous literotica.org addresses in the address book got infected and that's why there seems to be a tarageting of Literotica addresses.

WH or ayone else, is there a way to block this from my email box? I receive lots of emails to that account daily, or should I just keep dumping them all (wondering how many times and for how long I will have to do this...)

Hmmm.
I haven't gotten a one.
No surprise there though, I don't e-mail anyone.

I got a warning about that.

McAfee.com has seen a large and growing number of consumer
computers infected with W32/SirCam@MM. This is a HIGH RISK
VIRUS FOR CONSUMERS. The infected email can come from
addresses that you recognize. Attached is a file with two
different extensions. The file name itself varies.

The email message can appear as follows:

Subject: [filename (random)]
Body: [content varies]

Hi! How are you?
I send you this file in order to have your advice
or I hope you can help me with this file that I send
or I hope you like the file that I sendo you
or This is the file with the information that you ask for
See you later. Thanks

Hola como estas ?
Te mando este archivo para que me des tu punto de vista
or Espero me puedas ayudar con el archivo que te mando
or Espero te guste este archivo que te mando
or Este es el archivo con la información que me pediste
Nos vemos pronto, gracias.

The virus searches for .GIF, .JPG, .JPEG, .MPEG, .MOV, .MPG,
.PDF, .PNG, .PS, and .ZIP files in the MY DOCUMENTS folder
and attempts to send copies of these documents to email
recipients found in the Windows Address Book and addresses
found in cached files.

People all over the Net are being inundated with these mails. We're getting 10-15 an hour. It's driving us through the roof. Our virus checker catches them, but it's still a hassle.

KM posted a link on this thread to another thread where we discussed this virus. On that thread, our tech guru Dillinger gives some VERY helpful and thorough info & advice.

What if it is an attachment of Laurels butt?

I doubt that would be evil.. on the contrary I should think.

They are indeed the work of Satan himself. Attachments, doublestick tape, bubblewrap, and those unopenable CD wrappers.

That would be a scary attachment.

That is what I thought about my attachment, but popular opinion states otherwise, although I am sure they didn't see the butt check at the door.

*grinning*

Laurelove, I'd pay good money to lick that, er see, yeah, see that particular attachment.
