Is there any place for info on police procedures

I'm writing a story where a charecter gets into the police academy, is anybody out there who knows about this kind of stuff?
I'm assuming you don't just show up at the station and say "I wanna be a cop..."
What happens? does any one know, or is there a site to go to?
