Is the countryside a bit cleaner?

We need more chain gangs of prisoners working along the shoulder of our roads.:D

USA countryside used to look like shit. Pre-1960, American landscapes resembled Mexican roadsides.(*) As Desert Rat and protectionist Harry Oliver wrote, "All the highways between here and Wickenburg are beautiful this time of year. All the kleenex bushes are in bloom, right along the roadside. [And] the wildflowers at Fort Oliver were so thick this spring that you could hardly see the discarded beer cans."

Ladybird Johnson's cleanup campaign changed that. So did the DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS anti-litter campaign. Filthy countrysides no longer proclaim industrial progress. Civilian volunteers and prison work crews help police the trash. Y'all can, too. A little tidiness will keep rats in cities, where they belong.

(*) Many rural Mexican roadside spots are marked with FEDERAL PROPERTY - NO TRASH HERE signs. That's where much garbage piles up.
