Whatever they want. Most of the land is cultivated by agribusinesses whose executives live in cities, and, more importantly, base their decisions on profits dependent on urban consumption -- they won't let the cities starve. Family farmers have not been a significant political force since the late 19th Century.

No, what they do is pay their hired hands, who are not "farmers" in the sense of owning the land they work.
 
I agree that it doesn't look good for the democrat party in the midterms, but if it did collapse what then?

If the actual party fell do you think all the democrat voters would switch to supporting the GOP?

As a democrat voter I can tell you that aint happening. Especially if you nominate in 2024 someone as polarizing and as divisive as Donald J. Trump has proven himself to be.

Also America is trapped in a 2 party system, has been since the federalists and democrats were founded back in the 18th century. All those voters will need to vote for someone, and someone will run against Trump, and the democrat party or something new just like it will fill that void.

During centuries of economic growth. With centuries of contraction ahead, the US or whatever replaces it will be taking hard looks at what it needs and what it can afford.
