Earthquakes, tsunamis, flooding, mudslides, blizzards...

Does anyone else think that Mother Earth has had enough of us humans and has started a self cleansing cycle?

I went with the reality show thing.
However I must agree, she's pissed man!!!

Maybe. Just watched The Day After Tomorrow and it got me wondering what the hell is going on. Some strange events are pointing toward some kind of world wide change, I suspect. :(

Nature is inherently violent, even at microscopic levels. "We" do not matter as part of it in the grand scheme (except to ourselves), but we oft' get in the way.

"And the greatest arrogance of all Save the Planet. What? Are these fucking people kidding me? Save the planet, we don't even know how to take care of ourselves yet. We haven't learned how to care for one another. We're gonna save the fucking planet?

Besides, there is nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine. The people are fucked. Compared to the people, the planet is doing fine.

The planet will shake us off like a bad case of fleas, a surface nuisance. You want to know how the planet's doing, ask those people in Pompeii who are frozen into position how the planet is doing.

To be fair the planet probably views us as a minor threat. Something to be dealt with and I'm sure the planet will defend itself in the manner of a large organism."

I think not. Take a look at the USGS site, there have been a lot of earthquakes on the floor of the indian ocean, smaller tremblors that really presaged a big one, it was just bigger than anyone suspected.

Lots of Hurricanes, but that's cyclical, the real question there is do you see a lot next year or does it fall back to normal levels?

Cali's mudslides are a man made disaster. You can't build houses on the sides of mountains, strip away the old groth timber to clear lots and then NOT expect mudslides in a heavy rain. to me, the people who do this are just banking on sunny weather and while the get alot of that, a storm will come eventually.

I think mother nature seems angry because there are so many more people living in vulnerable areas. Krakatoa sent a tusunami that was perhaps bigger than this one, but no one really lived in the vulnerbale areas and news was so slow, no one really noticed.

Take a look at Cali's rt 1. It's build on top of multiple slides. They spend millions each year to try and keep it open. But they know there are slied, they have been there forever, people just didn't used to live in the slide areas.

I don't think Mother nature is any angrier than usual. I think humanity has expanded into areas that are only marginally habitable. We then compound the error by developing the conditions that would make something minor, a heavy rain and mud slide, Major. We move into costal plains and drain the tidal flats, then put up hotels for tourists. Or we cram thousands into the costal plains and put up shantys rather than buildings designed to handle wind and rain and flooding.

I think Mom Nature is getting a bum wrap. More ofthen than not, we are the authors of our own misery.

Well to be truthful. This is an oddly heavy storm year. I won't fault the "asking for it" disasters like mudslides, but the tsunamis, eqs, and hurricanes have been a little more active than usual without a reason such as El Nino. It's making the climatologists do a little WTF and that's not a sound you want from climatologists.

Especially when you are a species quite easily turned into Mother Nature's gimp.

So to sum up Colly's post (well thought out and intelligent as usual):

Mother Nature is rolling along, buisness as usual, and the humans are wipeing themselves out.

You got it gorgeous, mother nature has always acted this way over the centuries, sudden changes in weather patterns, bits of the Earth moving (without a sex act being performed), a few heavy rainstorms/snowstorms and the like.

What do we do, build houses 3 feet from the sea, build factories on the flood plains, tear all the trees off the side of a hill, etc, etc... Then moan like fuck when it all goes pear shaped.

I think saying that 'mother nature is pissed' is sort of shorthand for what you've just said. We've built were we aught not, and created many of the problems of our own doing, yes and created a natural reaction ("nature reacting"). So if you have any tendancy to humanize nature (mother nature) I think it'd be fair to say 'she's pissed.' But if you have more of a tendancy to think of the earth in a non-human, non-living way then a more scientific explaination (such as your own) is certainly more appropriate.

:)

It's inevitable really, the earth is still relativly young, still raw in the middle so it's always in flux. We just havent figured out how to live with it.
One day alas, we too will be extinct......but wasn't it fun?

Maybe we should just call it "Respect the Planet. Save Ourselves"

I don't where the term Mother Nature came from. Mother would signify that she cares, she doesn't.

And I'm recalling that little passage from Jurassic Park

No, you don't understand. The planet is not in danger. We are in danger. We don't have the power to destroy life on this planet. We don't have the power to save it either. We might have the power to save ourselves.

Considering the alternative, I'd say it was, on the whole.

I'm heading to Dairy Queen. If I get Jesus's face in the Hot Fudge on my sunday, I'm running for the hills!

Or maybe I'll sell it on eBay. :D

All I'm saying is that if the trees on the hill grow to spell: "I'm comin' to ice you suckas" it just might be a good idea to increase funding for a Mars colony.

Yeah, "Disasters $1.99".

Personally I think we should get the ball rolling on the Mars colony. It's never too early to start fucking up a whole new planet.

Nature isn't pissed. As much as we as humans would love to have that as the main reason.
Nature, unlike humans can tell when its resources have dimminished and therefore is seeking to cleanse itself and rebuild.
Reset if you will.

I think a Mars colony is a very bad idea. If we were intended to live on Mars, we would've been there in the first place.
Besides, many of Mars' conditions are not exactly optimal for human survival.

On a side note, Dairy Queen has nothing to do with the weather, it's just some stupid marketing person who thought that was the best way to express how cold their frozen treats are.
